Happy with Gas Mileage

After trading in my 2009 TL Tech FWD on my current 2012 TL Tech SH-AWD I feared that my gas mileage would drop significantly. I averaged 28.1 mpg over the last 20,000 miles on the '09 (mostly highway and with 100,000 miles on the car). I started out getting between 18 and 21 mpg on the '12 TL but now am getting 26 - 27 mpg with only 3000 miles on the car. I can only assume that this will increase as it did on the '09 TL.

You got to love having a car that gets great mileage and can jump from 40 mph to 80 mph in a few seconds when needed.

GREAT CARS!!

It is cold in PA/USA as well but yes, I have gotten much better gas mileage after several thousands of miles on my 2009 and am now starting to experience the same with the 2012. Most of my driving is highway without climbing steep grades. However, the Pocono's in PA have some moderate grades. I normally travel slightly above highway speed limits with cruise control.

Most cars, and particularly Honda products, improve gas mileage pretty significantly after they get some miles on them. We had an Accord that didn't attain its maximum mpg until it had about 30K on the clock.

On the highway if you use some sense, the SH-AWD can hit 28 mpg - not that that is why any of us bought these cars, but still a pleasant surprise.

I hope this is true, I have been lucky to get near 20 MPG on my commute...

My last tank gave me my best mileage yet, 28.6mpg and roughly 490 miles on the tank. I did more highway than usual though, about 75% highway. I have 9000 miles on the car since I bought it 5 months ago and my lifetime mileage is at 26mpg. I am more than happy with the mileage with this car, its just a few mpg's less than my 4cyl Accord.

I just drove to Seattle and back to Vancouver and averaged about 8.4l/100km's. I think that's about 28 MPG. But city driving I get about 13.5L/100km's ... 17.5 MPG.

BTW my car is a month old and has about 1000 miles on it.

Is that about the average?? 28 hwy and 17-18 city (MPG)

I'm in van as well. My commute from north van to burnaby gets me about 13.5-14.5. No better than my old Audi S4 (v8)...

I am in burnaby as well, as my daily commute is shorted to only 10min. My gas millage has gone up significantly. I average around town 16.5 km/h and i am very smooth on the throttle. I think the main reason behind is because i fire up the car to warm for 5 min and then shuts it off again after a 10min 45-55km commute.

I have a 2012 TL Advance with ~8400 miles on it. With an 80/20 mix of hwy/city driving, I am averaging 25.6 MPG.

If you can keep it around 70 - the SH-AWD seems to be able to hang around 30mpg. I notice mine goes down a bit when I push it up to 80. It's all keeping the tach under 2k in 5th gear and keeping the overdrive engaged it seems. I would expect the 6 speed to be a bit better.

ambient temperature plays a role, I've noticed mpg drop by at least 10% with colder temp say below 40F. It is very noticeable and these are the same business routes I make with 99% hwy miles with same driving habits. I haven't noticed significant mpg gains with increasing mileage on the car like some claim (I'm at 40k and seems similar to when the car was brand new).

Don't believe the MID. Mine always reads higher than what I calculate. I suspect your actual numbers are lower too. I use real numbers from whenever I fill up the car.

i dont believe pseudomanic either..

you have a 2009-2011 model, a sh-awd per-say..

its rated around 23mpg at the high side.. a 5 speed MT.

and your getting better miles than a 2012 which is rated at 28mpg highside?

as you know 2012 is 6 speed, which gets better miles.

i cruised from vegas on at 4 hour drive at pace of 70mph from stop till end and i couldnt even get close to 30mpg and my car is fairly new 10k on it. there is no way your 3.7L gets better mpg than my 3.5 fwd.. especially when you have a sub and about 400lbs more..

46,000 miles on mine, and I've averaged 24.5 mpg in mixed driving, so far.

For whatever it is worth, I can get 29-30 on mine when I'm on a highway trip.

09 FWD Tech here. I do Highway/stop-n-go traffic and the Mid currently reads 29.5mpg. I think without the stop-n-go I could get it to 31.

It takes effort though. You really need to be conscious of how you use the gas pedal.

'12 SH-AWD here, and nothing but S mode all day, every day for the past month

Mostly in town, getting around 17mpg

Highest I've seen highway is 26mpg on a 3 hour trip to southern IL, cruise set at 85mph

I beat my car like it owes me money

I'm FWD, so that helps. Plus the 09 TL is rated at 26mpg (fwd) and 25mpg (AWD)

It's not unusual at all for cars to get better than EPA rated MPG. The EPA tests are not a maximum. They're a standard test than can be used to compare different cars.

My 29.5 mpg figure is solely based on the MID, I have not hand calculated at all yet.

Definitely calculate the mileage yourself and not rely on the MID. In my post above, I got 28.6mpg when I calculated it by hand, the MID was telling me something like 29.8mpg. Also, I had instances where the MID was showing a lower mileage like 24mpg, but hand calculated it was closer to 26mpg.

When I pulled into the gas station this evening my MID stated 29.3mpg. I had 304.8 miles on trip A (resets on fillup) and put in 10.5 gallons. Hand calculated at 29.03mpg, pretty close to the MID 29.3. Honestly I KNOW I could hit over 31mpg if I didn't have to deal with the traffic.

Obviously, our cars have no problem handle the hwy run, even on the old 5-spd could get respectable mpg. Whoever suffer from the low mpg are mostly killed by the stop-n-go. I have 7K on my odo and life time mpg is 19.

I wish I'm not living in the city whenever I have to fill up the gas...

btw, I do check once in a while, my hand calculation match to the MID pretty nicely.

My last 3 Acura's have all gotten pretty good gas mileage. the '01 CL averaged about 27 with a mix of suburban driving and highway to work. The '04 TL didn't do quite as well in comparable driving, averaging about 25, but when I took it on an extended vacation drive from Dallas to Phoenix I was getting up to 34 average, with spurts of an incredible 38 outside of El Paso, but this was mostly downhill. My '12 TL, with just over 600 miles on it taking I-35 returning from San Antonio to Dallas I was getting 34 (at 70-75). On my trips from Dallas to our lake property on the TX/OK border, 2-lane highways varying at speeds from 55 to 70, no cruise control but hitting it hard when passing (leaving the passed car and 70 mph in the rear view mirror :-) ) I'm averaging about 29.

012TL-GLM's reply is awesome. Laughing out loud reading this. I'll have to remember this phrase. BTW, I can't seem to shake 21-22 MPG, 2012 SH-AWD Auto. I'm happy though. Mixed highway/stop and go driving with some spirited driving (when I can actually drive without traffic).

Yea I don't know how you guys can manage such high numbers either. I've been experiencing 24 mpg and thats 95% hw. I'm not complaining too much tho since its rated at 25. But in the city, forget it...

My '12 TL is FWD/Tech. If I drive around in the Dallas suburbs with typical stop-and-go and no highway I only get 19-22 mpg, but if I can get it on the highway, set cruise and minimize slow downs and acceleration due to traffic, that's when I get the 30+ mpg. I find that once you get it up to speed and can let the cruise control do its thing, the car is pretty efficient. Around here the octane rating is 93 for premium and there are few hills. I do note somewhat better gas mileage when the weather is warmer.

I just fill up with the Costco high octane (93 maybe?)

I've been hammering it some on this tank and the MID now shows about 27.

I wish these high 20 low 30 mpg predictions were true. I have a 60 mile round trip on the highway with the cruise going at 70 mph and my MID shows 24 at the most...

Most important thing - assumming the car is well maintained - is tire pressure. At 32 lbs I lose 1-3 mpg. On avg, city and mixed is 22, highway I've gotten as high as 30 mpg under 70 mph, and about 25 mpg at about 75-85 mph.

I just did a round trip from Dartmouth MA to loon mountain in Lincoln NH. The trip was 406 miles. When I got home I still had almost 1/4 tank. I averaged 27mpg doing about 75 mph.
