Finally got my TL, but got a question

been a member for awhile, and i finally purchased a 2009 TL SH-AWD w/tech....grigio/umber...i'll have pics in the morn, currently driving it back to texas. But i have one major question. Does the engine cut of when the key fob is a certain distance away, i tested this with my friend and he was able to open the door, shift out of park and drive around the block while i was standing far away with the key in my pocket...is that suppose to happen?????

If I recall once the car is started the car will not automatically shut off if the fob is gone, I beleive this is for saftey, you're on the HWY and the FOB malfunctions, do you want the car cutting out at 80MPH? I beleive once started the car will continue to run no matter how far you get from the FOB.

I know it seems odd, but this is the way that the car works.

If somebody does steal the car, he will have to shut it off sooner or later and he will not be able to easily start it again.

As you get to know the car more and get used to it, you will appreciate this feature because it will allow you to let your son park the car while you put a package in the house. It's just convenient.

And as someone else said, in the event that something happens to block the key's signal, or if the battery happens to drop to undetectable while you are still driving the car, you don't really want it to shut off on you.

The only thing that sucks about this is that in the winter you can't start the car, lock it, and come inside the house.

There is NO possible way to lock the car from outside with or without they keys on you and the car on.

Kind of sucks when you have young children and on cold days want to warm up the car abit before putting them in.

as i think about it...i would rather it just not let the car shift out of Park when the fob is not near...even though tha door may be unlocked no one could drive away...thats just my thoughts on the matter

I thought there was a Remote Engine Starter System for these situations - cost a little bit more $$ I think.

There actually is a way to lock your car from outside while it is on. While the car is on, you have to take the key out of the key fob and use the key hole on the door handle to lock it. I do that when I'm warming up my car at work.

Is that an aftermarket steering wheel cover? The AWD has a thick enough steering wheel, wouldn't that make it too thick with the cover?

Nice umber by the way!!!

I am embarrassed to admit this, but I have first hand knowledge of this. I finished a round of golf and loaded up my clubs. I drove the car over to where the guys in the group had parked and pulled up leaving the car running telling one of the guys that I would take his cart back up for him and started to walk away from the vehicle. Of course the car beeped at me letting me know I was walking away.

Knowing that they were there with the car I set the key on the sunroof (leaving the car running) and turned the cart in. Getting back to the car, we all decided we would meet at a local restaurant and headed over there. Once we got there I decided that I was going to go to the DMV instead as I had just received my DRS and it was early enough that I could get it done without taking time off for work so I pulled up to them and said c ya. Got to the DMV, registered the car and when I came back out I noticed the car was unlocked? That is not like me I thought while getting in. I pushed the button to start it and it would not do anything? Hmmmmm, where is my key?

Somewhere after leaving the course the key obviously had slid off of the top of the car lost forever. I called the wife and she brought the spare.

So the moral of this very long story is, you can drive and drive and drive till it runs out of fuel without the key once the vehicle has been turned on. BUT, once you turn it off, you are screwed.

Acura engineers envisioned a scenario where in a husband and wife would ride to the airport to drop him off. He's driving and when they reach the airport he gets out unloads his luggage kisses her goodbye and leaves. Unknowingly, he has the key in his pocket. The way the car is designed his wife would be able to drive home without difficulty as long as she didn't turn the car off.

yup that's how these systems are supposed to work. Can you imagine the other scenario? Your wife/gf is pissed off at you and throws the key fob out the window while you're going 80 on the freeway. Car shuts down and there's a 20 car pile up on the late night news.
