Fastest Speed

Not sure how to start/run a poll so here's an interesting question in standard format.

How fast have you had your TL? Give a brief description of where and when (time of day).

For me, I've had it up to 130mph - AMAZINGLY, THERE WAS STILL MORE PEDAL TO GO!

I'm on the road in the early am (~5:30am) and in NJ, Route 287 is a speeder's dream highway!!!!

For just a moment I touched 110 mph in the TL, and the stability is quite remarkable at that speed. Again I have said this before in another post, in comparison with the ZR1, at sub-80 mph the ride is similar when the ZR1 is in the "comfort mode". However, there is no viceral comparison in the rate of acceleration between the two cars. In the time it takes the TL to go from 80-110 mph, the ZR1 is going 155 mph. I have hit 168 mph before, but that was at 5:45am on a Sunday morning. I have no doubt that car's top speed is 205 mph, as the raw acceleration is simply intoxicating anywhere on the speedo.

In 1st gear starting at 4,500 rpm and then gunning it to fuel cut off and then to 2nd gear is more than I expected in the TL. There is no comparison with the ZR1 as it is clawing for traction at anything below 75 mph. For god sake the ZR1 spins the tires from 2nd to 3rd gear and chirps into 4th at 150 mph!

Is the 4G governed (I assume it is)? If so, what is the cut-off?

I heard that 135 is about max with governer on the 4G. The same with the 3G that is as fast as my 3G sedan (3.2) would go.. was incredible feeling.. scary too cuz a cross wind was blowing and affected the car.. ooooh.. I have told this story before but.. what the heck, I was chasing an M3.. he just walked away from me.. I was going 135 and a red Charger R/T passed me like I was sitting still.. I backed off in shame... we don't really have a fast sports car..

This was an open stretch in Texas, near Houston called Grand Parkway

The speedo will go that high, but can the car? Most have limiters on them to prevent us from .. ourselves

Automatics are governed to 132-135(one of the two) but the 6MTs are governed to 150mph

My experience ..

I haven't had the pleasure yet to push my new TL to the limits that it has but i did have the opportunity with my 3rdgen TL ..Actually had a couple opportunities with that one. The one i remember the most was sort of a ego booster yet had me second guessing the driver of the other car.I won't disclose location because i am pretty sure the proper authorities do scan this site.I was minding my business and this bmw 6 series pulls up behind me and i kindly pull over to the middle lane because i was trying to avoid embarrassing myself putting a TL un moded against that car. So he comes behind me when i switch lanes so i switched to sport shift and dropped a gear or 2 then peeled off on him at that point i made it up to about 100 so he catches up and passes me as i expect and i catch up with him at this point im doing 120 and on his tail and he couldn't shake me which made me fall in love all over again with my TL ..But as i said it boosted my ego yet i know with the right person behind that wheel i shouldn't have been able to be on the tail of a 6 series BMW ...

So 4G is same as 3G?

Pushing the clutch was fun back when I was a young whipper-snapper... now that I have "matured".. slipping the gear into D and pushing the gas.... I like that.

I could not imagine how bad it would be stuck in traffic with a clutch... obviously many many love it and that is cool.. but not necessarily better .. for all/me /bow

It's a limit on the auto trans.

For the 3G, from '04 - '06, autos had a ~150-ish limiter. When they changed to the RL-based auto trans for the '07/'08's, they carried over the RL limit of ~135-ish.

I guess that has carried forward to the 4G. Not sure if it's really a trans issue/concern/protection of if it was just easier carring the electronic/software over.

Has anyone seen anything in the car mag reviews regarding/confirming speed limiters?

Neighbor, what I was getting at was the difference in speed limiters.
150 as opposed to the 135auto's.
Higher speed limiter means better right!?

i believe it was only the type s that had the limiter that came with the rl transmission and motor...since they borrowed that stuff for the type s...

IIRC, the 3rd gen TL fell into 3 categories. Pre MMC was governed at roughly 150 MPH. Post MMC when they introduced a type S, the type S auto was governed at 135 while the base automatic went to 150. 6MT was 150 no matter regardless of whether it was pre or post MMC.

Again IIRC, the 3rd gen type S went to a 3.5 liter engine swiped from an RL and slightly detuned to maintain the RL's flagship/most powerful status. The governor that the 2nd gen RL had came with that which is why the Type S was governed at 135 like the RL was.

Somewhere in the 3rd gen TL section there was a rather extensive thread on it started by an automatic Type S owner was pissed that a base TL had a higher top speed.

This brings back memories for me as I remember confronting several speeders here on AZ. Here is the quote from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration;
"Speeding is a factor in 31 percent of all fatal crashes, killing an average of 1,000 Americans every month." The NHTSA estimates the cost to society of speed-related crashes to be more than $40 billion each year.
Please take your car to a track day and stop driving at twice the posted legal limit. It is not worth the risk to your car, yourself, or other drivers.
And here's a message for all who will come back with some witty reply to my advice, "I'm no angel, I have made stupid mistakes and I am lucky to be alive. Please take my advice and learn from my failure. The least you will save is money"

I thought I had seen something about the speed limit - having to do with the SH-AWD?

Since someone mentioned Corvettes - Chevy had their Main Street event here recently - If you test drove 2 chevy cars (such as a cruz)- you got a stamp that allowed you to drive the Volt , Camaro and GS Corvettes -

I had never driven a Corvette b4 - but was impressed - You could actually drive it on more than a slow course - Short pedal to the floor straight away - and then several ever tightening turns - only having to slow down at the end -

You were only allowed to drive the performance cars 2x - but somehow I managed 6 laps

car was fast and ran great in the turns - took the rest of the day to get that grin off of my face

-- since we are posting about the TL here - again I thought the SH-AWD was top speed limitation??

Often times Top Speeds are electronically limited by a mfr - per the Speed Rating of the Tires they install when the car is built

Some other mfrs allow the speed limited to be "turned off" ---as an option - they can sell you - such as some MBs

Right. Info on the 3G was intended as background, not really for comparision, but comparing is somewhat inevitable.

So, what are the limiters for the 4G? Any definitive knowledge and/or published references?

I maxed the governor on my M45S at 155 as well. About 4AM. It had more juice, but the computer wouldn't let it go.
