Extended warranty on front drive TL

We are close to buying Front drive TL with Tech package. We are being told that the extended warranty will be about $2000 for 7 years 100,000 miles. I have seen somewhere in this forum that folks have gotten close to $1200. We live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and would be looking at 0 deductible. Anyone bought extended warranty from Acura lately?

You can do better than that if you want to do better. There's a lot of profit for the finance manager in the extended warranty prices, so it sort of depends on how much mercy you want to have.

I am sure that people will pipe up very soon with better prices than what you are talking about. In my case I paid $1995 for 125,000 miles because there is no doubt in my mind that this will be the approximate mileage when I'm looking for my next Honda/Acura.

In my case it is a Costguard plan administered by Karen Radley Acura.

At the stage that you are in with your purchase, you need to be careful to keep your temper and your blood sugar regulated. At the point you're sitting down to sign the documents for the purchase, you will be a little worn down if you're not careful, and you could lose your focus on all kinds of small charges that could add up.

They don't mean to be cheating you or anything...but the finance manager will be assuming things and running things up the flagpole to see if you salute or complain.

$2000 is not worth it for three years or 50K miles of additional coverage over the manufacture's. Anything that happens during the first four years is automatically defaulted to the manufacture's. However the extended warranty is running from the day you purchased it. So in actuality you are paying for 3yrs of warranty after the factory warranty period.

Chances are, if no significant electronic gremlins (costly replacement) pop up during the factory warranty period, nothing significant is likely to occur during the proceeding 3 years. Same thing goes for the transmission. With proper maintenance if the car has not experienced any costly repairs it should last another 5-8 yrs without any significant problems.

These extended warranty do not cover wear and tear. The TL is known to be a reliable car. For you to hope to break even the extended warranty has to be for 4-5 additional years after the factory one has expired and for closer to $1000.

Just my $0.02

You don't have to buy the extended at the time you buy the car. I think Acura allows to you buy it within your first 6000 miles or so. And, you can buy it from any dealer. Search around the internet and you can do much better and since it's just paper work, you can buy it via telephone from a dealer anywhere in the nation.

Paid $1150 for my 6yrs/120k extended (I drive about 25k/year so my factory warranty would have been over in 2 years) from Acura of Boston and I live in NJ. This was when you could get it on the internet but I think Acura has shut down all internet ords. But, you can call. I think the price has gone up but not buy much. I've read Curry Acura has similar prices.

I know, but there's always a way that they catch us. Or catch me anyway.

In December 1999 I got an extended warranty on an '00 ITR...I just couldn't get over the feeling that this was a hell of a lot of HP for such a tiny motor. The only thing that ever went wrong was they replaced the rear hatch struts free with 90+K miles on it.

In December 2005 they got me because my '06 Accord 6-6 HFP Coupe just had a hell of a lot of electronics on it and it just looked like a complicated car to me. Nothing was ever done to this car until it was traded in at 105K miles.

In December 2009 I couldn't get over that we had a 305 HP car with that tiny LSD in the rear. I know, I know...the history of AHM tells me nothing will go wrong...I just couldn't help it. Plus I know the factory warranty will run out very fast at the rate I rack up the miles.

For you to hope to break even....
Are we supposed to think we're breaking even on insurance? Do you break even on your health insurance? I don't mean to appear combative...just presenting the opposing view. :-)

I just remembered a time they did not get me.

I was noticing the gap in the years I posted, and now I remember that I did not buy an extended warranty when I bought a commuter Honda in December 2001.

In December 2001, the dealer organisations were in a panic because of how unpopular the EP3 was looking, and they dumped them down to $15995 and I bought one that I used until I got in the Accord in December 2005.

It was a 160 HP car, it was a Civic, and I was thinking, "Well. They've done this before and it went fine."

I got a 100k/7 year warranty $0 deductible thru Curry Acura. It's a genuine HondaCare warranty so any Honda/Acura dealer will honor it. IIRC I think I paid $1150 for it. I have the FWD/Tech car too. I think it's well worth it. In the event you sell the car, it's fully transferable so it represents a nice insurance policy for the buyer. Imagine if you were buying a car beyond the original manufacturer's warranty. Normally it would be a purely "as is" purchase. Once you took possession, anything that happened would be your responsibility. Now, if you decide to sell the car with 75k miles, you know the buyer is 100% protected for the next 25k miles. Definitely will increase the resale value of the car.

I guess all I was saying was for the warranty to be cost effective, it has to be around $1000K and give 3-4 years coverage after the factory warranty has expired. Plus, we already have to pay car insurance to cover accidents and big ticket damage if necessary.

I have insurance on my car. I am out of factory warranty. It was a calculated decision when I bought it new not to get the extended warranty. It was easier for me to make that decision because I don't have Navi and the car then was not as technically infused with electronics as the car now.

Thanks everyone. I will aim at $1000 for 7 or 8 years at 100,000/125,000 miles.

Yea, they took you for a ride on that one... The extended warranty would cover you all in after your factory warranty ran out. That seems like it might be illegal... they're not actually selling you anything, they just took your $499... I would contact them back, and then if they don't refund it, contact your attorney general.

^+1 (!!!!!!!)

What the hell is a Certified Warranty??? Sounds very illegal to me! After a call to the Attorney General I would report the dealer to Acura also.

I think for navi-equipped TL's the extended warranty plan still might make a little sense. I don't think 80+% of the hard drive's in the navi or lcd backlighting will last as long as the 8 years on the longest acuracare term. OTOH, if you 1. Don't plan on keeping the TL for a long time or 2. Drive a crapload of miles and will hit the 120K easily, then the ext warranty might not be such a great deal. We bought the extended warranty specifically on the Pilot as the '03 Accord's Navi failed in it's 4th year (90K on the odo-way past original factory warranty, wife's a realtor and does crapload of driving!) and cost >$2000 to fix! I like Acuracare as they don't do tiered pricing like BMW's extended warranty with options. For example on BMW extended warranty, they tack on extra $1000 if you have the i-drive navi lol.

I am really leaning away from the extended warranty, they priced them at
6yr 70K $1,400
7yr 70K $1,595
7yr 100K $1,825
8yr 100K $2,075

You can do better by shopping around the internet. I got mine a few months ago, $1150 for 120k, 6 years. I think the prices have gone up since, but only like $200 or so.
