DRL Power Reduction - Lower Voltage OR Pulse Width Modulation Method
DRL Power Reduction - Lower Voltage OR Pulse Width Modulation Method
After taking a few pics of my newly installed LED DRL kit I noticed that the image on the camera LCD showed that the LED's were flickering, seemingly indicating that the voltage being supplied to the High Beam circuit in DRL mode is being modulated, i.e using Pulse Width Modulation technique to effectively lower the voltage to the bulbs, and produce that LOVELY yellow glow we all know and "hate".
Can anybody confirm that is indeed the case?
If this is the method being used, it is not wise to connect HID ballasts to the high beams as tehy are likely to be damaged by this pulsed supply.
This method is a DC version of that used in household dimmer switch circuits.

You will not see anything from the Pics, they look normal because they are snapshot at 100ths of a second. When I was taking the pics I could see the LED's flickering on the camera LCD which updates at around 10-20fps, seemingly because of the way the power is being modulated. Leading me to believe that it is not just a resistive circuit that lowers to power supplied to the High Beams to produce the DRL illumination.
So all you did was swap a LED bulb in the DRL's right?
DRL's run at 60% power. 100% would be when you high beam hence they're much brighter when you have them on. Has it thrown you a DRL error too? As far as flickering goes it could be you got bad LEDs or your camera LCD is messed up. No way you can't see flickering with your own eyes but you see it in a camera LCD imo
