Driving without keys

This is probably covered off in the owners manual, but I lost interest in reading that bible shortly after purchasing the car. I tried searching but found nothing.

When I exit my car while running with the keys in my pocket, the car beeps to remind me. I've often thought as I'm getting my mail, what would happen if someone jumps in and takes off.

Would the car still drive as the engine is on? Would it not let you put it in drive or does it shut off the engine once no longer paired with the proximity key?

I would think its a safety issue if you couldn't drive an already started car. Lets say you're in the desert and get out of the running car and lose the key. Stranded?

The car can be driven away yes. So watch your friends. Once the car is turned off it can not be turned back on.

usdmJon is correct. Once the car has been started it can be driven without the key fob in the car but when it is turned off, it will not restart without the fob being in the car.

Yes, once the engine has been started with "start engine" button, anyone can drive away the car with or without the key fob.

simple.. turn off the car before you walk away..

should not be leaving your car on while no one is present anyways... you are asking to get jacked.

As a side question to OP... is there any way to turn off that loud beeping noise when you leave the car & close the door with key fob in your pocket? Or maybe lower the volume of the beep?

I've got a 2012 & it doesn't turn off unless the range is like a mile.. I've tested it, my friend drove 5-6 blocks away still ran.

not sure in what situation your asking.. with the car on or the car off when you lock the car?

with the car on, all you need to do is not close the door..

with the car off, if you want to just lock the car, you can adjust the sound via your center display on your gauges.

seriously.. where are you getting these info?? do you just believe it is like that or do you have actual information to back that up??

i believe this feature is a safety hazard.. i dont think a car should suddenly shut off due to not in range.. i think this is why acura has not implemented this..

What should be done is that you should not be able to put the car on D if or in gear if M/T if the keys are not present.. or should not be able to change gears.

If true, this will open up a can of worms in legal lawsuits for the car manufacturers, in the case that, the driven-off car suddenly goes dead in the middle of a highway or a traffic intersection and causes serious accidents.

He is talking about the loud series of beeps the car makes if you exit the car with the key fob while it is still running. It makes 3-5 loud fast beeps to let you know it is still on with no key in the car.

I would agree with him on the beeps being too loud... if I get out of the car while its running say to run in a gas station it beeps extremely loud and people look at you strangely.

As far as I know, there is no way to disable this feature.

The beep IMO isn't that loud its just a safety feature to remind you & a lot of manufactures have this feature.

It infuriates me when people leave their cars running and unattended. Especially when I see kids in the cars. Perhaps im more biased after the owner of an F150 did the same thing and someone jumped into it driving off. Then slammed into me headon running from the cops totalling my 07 TL/w Nav.

Dont leave your god damn car running or you get what you deserve. Its that simple.

Install a remote starter with an auto kill switch. It's a lot cheaper than a lawsuit if your car gets stolen and they end up seriously hurting or worse yet killing someone.
