Dealers Can't Sell certain 4G's?

Ok, so I just got off the phone with my salesman friend over at Jackson Acura. I called to ask about a 13 SHAWD Advance. He informed me that they can't sell any TL's involved in the massive airbag recall. He said until it's repaired or they are given the green light they can be shut down because of the potential health hazard with deployment, he advised they aren't even supposed to take them in on trade. Has anyone else heard of this or bought one with disclosure or non-disclosure about the hazard and recall?

Well, they can't sell any 4G TL's because of the Takata Airbag recall. Because it's unsafe it doesn't pass safety and they wouldn't be able to sell you the car.

Interesting article I found after searching news for "acura stop sale" term and sheds some light on this specific issue:

Honda said in its dealer memo that it will recall the vehicles, but that replacement parts are unavailable and won’t be on hand until late summer. Those parts will be sourced from a Takata competitor, Honda said.

The memo also included a warning: Dealerships would be responsible for any claims stemming from selling an unrepaired car from the affected population.

“Should an unrepaired vehicle result in any claim because of the required recall repair, the dealership will be solely responsible to the claimant, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims,” Honda said in the memo.

Federal law bars the sale of new vehicles with pending recalls, but not that of used vehicles, and regulators have been stymied in their efforts to compel dealers to make recall repairs on used vehicles before sale.

Honda’s order would apply to its own dealerships only and not independent used-car dealers.
Models affected:
The recall also covers several Acura models: the 2005-2012 Acura RL, 2009-2014 Acura TL, 2010-2013 Acura ZDX, 2013-2016 Acura ILX and the 2007-2016 Acura RDX, according to a Honda press release issued late Wednesday.
So looks like two factors at work:
Honda says to dealers: if you sell a non-fixed car with the bad airbag....any lawsuit is on your own.

Fed law that bans selling of new cars with pending recalls.

So looks like 13/14 TLXs are gonna be sitting on lots for a while.....

I thought it was only vision-impaired (aka blind) people who buy the 4G TL. Doesn't sound like it'll effect that much of the market

Speaking of the visually impaired...

You had to go and waste a whole thought. From your statement you should use them sparingly since it seems to be in short supply .

By the dealer I go to, and who I called yesterday, I was told they'd take my car, if I wanted to trade it in.

Can they sell it, before the problem is fixed? I don't know.

I can't see why Honda would tell them "no" to taking the car in. But, who knows?

Any updates? I have been looking for a '12 or newer 6MT TL and don't see any from Acura dealers on autotrader or cars.com. Is this why?

Yes, on Thursday I saw my local Acura dealer had at least four 4G TL's that used to be for sale but now sit in the back of their lot because of the recall. It's probably a really bad time to be looking for a 4G TL haha.

Also looks like late model off lease TL's (2012-2014) have gone up in price - Before the stop sale, it seemed like I could probably buy a 3 year old/36k-ish mile TL Tech in my area, CPO'd for ~$23k to $24k. Now no CPOs (obviously) and prices for used 3yr/36k is around $25k+

I wonder if Acura dealerships part of auto groups are able to have a sister dealership (i.e. a sister Ford or Lexus dealership) take the car in as trade to sell? But It seems like very few of the Acuras affected by the recall are making their way onto the used car market... Will be interesting to see how much prices dip when there are a whole ton of 4G TLs (especially 2013 off-leased) rush onto the market as airbag recalls are performed.

Yep, looking for white or silver 2013-2014 TL-AWD, and there is not much to chose from in Chicago area(offering numbers cut in half since recall announcement)...
Would really like to buy new one but and TLX is not an option....it is such a big downgrade compared to TL....

I talked to mine here in Cincinnati and he claims to have over 30 in his lot that he can't sell.

I would think that once the parts become available, some of these dealers are going to have a fire sale. Might be a good time to get into a newer model with lower miles for me.

at this point I didn't want to finance a vehicle but If i can find a 13 Base w Advance with 38k miles for $19999 I would buy it. Else these vehicles are going to sit as the market will be flooded
