Lightbulb Dash Cam Recommendations for 4G TL

Hey Everyone!

I'm looking for suggestions on a nice quality dash cam that would fit nicely in my 4G. I'm interested in something with at-least 720p resolution. Maybe GPS data as well?

Recently, my insurance company (State Farm) advised me they will be offering me a discount on my policy if I have a dash-cam installed in my vehicle. Not sure if this is company wide, or just my agent.

I'm thinking it's an excellent idea with winter coming, and to catch those who like to break check to get a check.

Thanks for your input in advance.

I've always been tempted to pick this one up:

Blackvue's are the standard in today's dash cam market.

I personally have a G1WH, it's cheap and it works. You can get it for 39.99 here

G1WH 2.7-inch Full HD 1080P Car Dash VR Camera Recorder G-sensor Novatek NT96650-42.68 and Free Shipping| GearBest.com
Use this coupon code: ozcardvr
Be careful when buying a G1WH from other sources, there are a lot of fakes out there. I ordered and can confirm that Gearbest is legit.

The G1WH records 1080p and for the price it's pretty amazing. Here is a quick example video

I also hardwired the dashcam using my a add a circuit kit that taps into the fuse box.

They look pretty high-quality.
I'm interested in the two-channel setup.
It offers a front camera and a separate rear camera.

If you insist on spending 200+ for a dashcam I recommend FINEVu. You should really do your research on BlackVue, they tend to have problems. Check out https://dashcamtalk.com/ to learn more.

What sucks with positioning a rear camera is the 3rd brake light being in the way...for our cars.

Is anyone running the rear camera with tinted windows? How's the video quality behind the tint?

I am, 5% tint. During the day it looks fine, but at night you could barely see anything.

Stay away from BlackVue, lots of reliability issues. I know earlier in this thread I recommended the FineVu, but the new $200 I recommend now is the Street Guardian. 1080P, Sony sensor, low profile, comes with GPS speed and has a proven track record.

check dashcamtalk for ultimate resource.

Many resellers on amazon may sell fakes...so check dashcamtalk for reputable sellers.

I have the G1W basic for a front cam and its fine...Been looking at the streetguardian as well as an upgrade but tempted by others as well....we'll see.

The rear 3rd brake light does make things a bit annoying (in my 3G TL btw)

Blackvue has low bitrate compared to others and apparently known for some pixelation and poor image quality...it is very expensive for sure but there are very good alternatives out there. The huge form factor is a negative as well.

Check this website for good reviews/forums and many other options: https://dashcamtalk.com/

The Street Guardian as stated is on my radar as my main front cam replacement...then I'll move my current G1W to the rear once I figure out the wiring...

Is an add a circuit kit all you need with the G1W? What about an adapter for the power cable? And will it drain your car's battery?

There's a couple of ways you could do it, I personally used an add a circuit kit and this thing

Amazon.com : EDO Tech® Ultra Compact 5V Mini USB Direct Hardwire Car Charger Cable Kit for DVR Dash Cam Vehicle Camera Recorder : Car Electronics Amazon.com : EDO Tech® Ultra Compact 5V Mini USB Direct Hardwire Car Charger Cable Kit for DVR Dash Cam Vehicle Camera Recorder : Car Electronics

Alternatively you could use the car adapter your camera came with in conjunction with this
Amazon.com: SMAKN® 12V 5A Female Car Cigar Cigarette Lighter Socket Plug Connector Adapter: Electronics Amazon.com: SMAKN® 12V 5A Female Car Cigar Cigarette Lighter Socket Plug Connector Adapter: Electronics

It will not drain your battery as long as you're pulling from a fuse that is only powered on when the car is powered on. I used the ACC fuse for my front camera and the radio fuse for my rear camera.

What do you recommend for the rear? And could you take a picture of its location?

I'm close to pulling the trigger on this:

I have a G1W for the rear and a Papago 520 for the front. I should have gotten the Street Guardian though.

I am interested in ordering a front/rear set. Problem I run into is having my valentine 1 mounted to my mirror just underneath using a blendmount. I'd prefer the cameras be as small as possible. Can anyone post pics of them installed?

They work against radar, however it does not work against LIDAR which uses a laser. It might be able to detect it, but by the time it detects it you're already caught.

v1 has worked great for me especially when paired with a 3rd party app which helps filter out false alarms. As for laser, yeah you're pretty much screwed. If you're driving among other cars usually the v1 catches laser off another car before the cop gets to you, but if you're driving alone and the laser alert goes off.... Just be polite and pay the ticket...

No passive detection methods, imo, would do any good against laser. Since laser is essentially instant on and have very little diffusion effect (like radar) to be able to detect ahead of time with any practical use.

Will likely need active measures like a laser jammer, which for many states is still legal. Radar jammers, obviously, is illegal under federal FCC rules IIRC.

Just purchased the Street Guardian SG9665GC V2 and will hard wire via this kit:

Amazon.com : Dash Camera Vehicle Hard Wire Kit - Mini USB Compatible with G1w / G1w-C / G1WH / GT680W / Mini 0801 / Mobius Action Spy Tec Camera and More | Car DVR Camera Recorder Dashboard Dashcam | Black Box Video Recorder | : Car Electronics Amazon.com : Dash Camera Vehicle Hard Wire Kit - Mini USB Compatible with G1w / G1w-C / G1WH / GT680W / Mini 0801 / Mobius Action Spy Tec Camera and More | Car DVR Camera Recorder Dashboard Dashcam | Black Box Video Recorder | : Car Electronics

Looking at the fuse box (driver's side and passenger's side) which circuit should I tap into? Preferably a 10 amp because I'm buying this or does it not matter?:

Amazon.com: Pico 0956PT 10 Amp ATM Mini Blade Fuse Add-A-Circuit Fuse Holder: Automotive Amazon.com: Pico 0956PT 10 Amp ATM Mini Blade Fuse Add-A-Circuit Fuse Holder: Automotive

I have this

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00VA5...thinkware+f750

Paired with this for the rear camera

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SO3...C9ZRAN1GX00P2R

I specifically did not want a dash cam with a screen. The screen is so small it's pointless. Not to mention the screen makes the unit bulky and just looks messy on your windshield.

The Thinkware F750 has built in wifi and you can download the Thinkware dashcam app for your mobile phone. You can connect your phone to the dash camera and view the videos or download them straight to your phone. You can also view live feed on your cellphone too.

I have this same camera and I can highly recommend it.

As a bonus, I find that the red light camera warning is super useful. It has saved me from at least two tickets in the last two months that I've had it. It has a built in GPS so it knows where you are and the red light cams are.

It also has lane departure warning and front collision warning - the latter which i find more useful.

Furthermore, it can record for up to 2 days when you are parked and saves all motion / incidents that occur such as if someone hit you and ran.

I was going to go with the Blackvue until I read some iffy reviews on it, and don't regret getting the Thinkware.

FYI, I got the front for 229 from amazon, and the rear for 75 in December. The hard wire kit was about 25 bucks or so. It's not cheap, but given what it has, its worth it.

Is the Thinkware rear camera standalone? Or do you need the Thinkware front camera?

I sold my V1 and only use my Passport on back roads. The addition of blind spot radar has pretty much made either one useless. The State Troopers in my area all use K-band radar which is the same as the blind spot radar sensor (although the LEO's radar is much stronger).
