B14 service without timing belt package
Hey all,
I'm around 102,000 miles and had the B14 code pop up on the MID in my 2011 TL. I bought my TL used ~70K miles. The timing belt was replaced at 96K at a dealership with the water pump (full timing belt package). What should I be expecting for the B14 service now? As far as I can tell, this is what is recommended:
B: Replace Engine Oil and Filter. Inspect various systems and components
1: Rotate Tires and check tire pressure and condition
4: Replace spark plugs, replace timing belt (if equipped), inspect water pump, and inspect valve clearance
I called around a few dealerships to get an upper bound baseline, and they quoted ~$1,900 with $1,800 of that being the spark plug replacement and valve adjustment. Spark plugs alone were $600.
Are they quoting me on something I don't need with the valve adjustment? Or are their prices just outrageous? I'm planning on checking with local Honda dealerships and independent shops, but can anyone chime in on whether I need a valve adjustment? I'm not noticing anything noisy, but I obviously don't trust the dealership to let me know if it is ok.
Is the spark plug replacement something a novice can do? It looks like I should go with OEM plugs, so I'm not sure how much I would end up saving.

I'm struggling to find a local shop that will even do this. The only one that says they will also said that 4g Acuras don't even need valve adjustments. That doesn't sound right.

They do need them. Anyone charging more than about $800 total for an oil change, spark plugs and valve adjustment is just ripping you off. Find a Honda mechanic.

Thanks for the help. I ended up going the DIY route for the spark plugs and am holding off on the valve adjustment for now. Went ahead and replaced the air filters and did a seafoam treatment while I was at it. It was my first time doing any DIY, and it was pretty fun. Hopefully I didn't bust anything.

B and 1 cost me $63 dollars this morning.
What the heck is book time for valve adjustment? $1200 sounds insane - Google is finding threads on this forum where people were quoted $500 or less.

$63 for B1 service is super cheap. My local dealership usually charge $100 for A1 and $200 for B1. I usually only opt for just an oil change. Comes out about under $70.

Those are similar prices to me. I'm in LA though, so definitely on the higher end of the price spectrum.

I had the 105k service done on my 2010 TL by a friend who's an Acura Dealership Master Tech and he said that if it's not making noises then it's not necessary to do it at the same time like doing the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. It doesn't save you any money on labor hours because they're servicing different areas of the engine. You can come back 2 years later and it will be the same hours of labor to do the valve adjustment. That's why I opted out of the service until later.
