April sales numbers interesting
The 09 TL is actually doing decent, and kicking butt on the G37. G sales are off 47%!! What I found also interesting is Hyndai sold more Genesis Sedans than Infiniti sold G Sedans, just by a few, but still the G sedan seems to be faced with growing competition and stumbling mid-life.

Wow it is surprising. It looks like the "ugly duckling" is maturing better than many would have believed. The current G37 I would think has the best bang for buck, considering performance, looks and interior. The 4G beats the G in interior and tech but lags in performance and looks. The "M" has 2008 RL numbers. Yikes. I'd like to see how the IS and GS are doing.

ES: 3,549
IS: 2,324
GS: 468
The GS is practically down to RL numbers.
Here's the Audi A4 for good measure.
A4: 3,494
Although the current TL may never be as successful as the 3G, it is still holding up fairly well compared to its competitors.

The GS is is the same position as the RL. RL was selling in the same amount of numbers last year. The GS is a year younger than the RL so that basically means the GS has nose-dived in sales. Not surprising though since the GS really doesn't stand out at anything.

The $2000 marketing support has helped sales immensely IMO. Almost bought one, but got a Dodge Ram instead. Just couldn't pass up the employee pricing + $2500 rebate + 0% APR. Although the bankruptcy is a little unnerving, it's not unexpected.
The TL/tech we tested was really nice. We never considered any of the TL's competition other than a Lexus, but I had headroom issues in a friends Lexus so it was out. We own an Accord and considered the TL an upgrade while staying in the Honda family. If things work out as we hope, in the near future we'll probably be in a TL. Hopefully the deals will still be there too.

It seems TL is catering a different crowd now. I think it is now marketed towards
middle aged middle class men. The different cars that different age groups could afford went down a step. People that once drove cars like GS or RL when the economy was good, are now driving 4G TL and ES. No offense, but I dont think a Nissan Skyline is appropriate for a middle aged person, and it's not all that affordable for the younger crowd.
I think the A4 sells well because younger people are proud to drive an affordable car with an Audi badge. Without options, the 2.0T is priced pretty close to a V6 Accord.

The A4 is a real head scratchier. You may be able to make an A4 as cheap as an Accord, but the number of them that are configured (and sold) that way would not account for their sales volume. Look at the A6 numbers and I think that the higher trim A4s are stealing from the A6. This is now possible because of the size of the new car. I still say it's the size of the car that is the reason for more sales.

Yes - Audi has put incentives on the A4 however they have been different than the Acura incentives. Currently they have $1500 Loyalty Cash and some financing. Loyalty cash is useless to new customers (like me - potentially) and I do not intend to finance so 1.9% or 2.9% low rates do not interest me. Previously Audi had $750 Owner Loyalty cash - again no help to new owners. This compares to Acura that has put $2000 in marketing support of which most is being passed back to the customers. To date Audi has been very stingy with their incentives to new customers and the loyalty cash has been difficult to use by many current Audi owners due to the restrictions. Basically an A4 is going for invoice plus $250 while the TL is under invoice.
My point was if Audi put $1000 to $2000 in cash that could be passed back to all customers then I think the sales would show an even larger increase.

I just don't get Audi anymore. Back in the 80's and 90's, they used to be the value leader among German luxury cars. The after the success with the TT and A4, they got big-headed and raised their prices permanently. Nowdays, Audi's are usually more expensive than their BMW and Mercedes counter-parts. (e.g. a RS4 will usually cost $20K-25K more than a M3 or AMG C63....ridiculous!).

The M and the GS are really stinky it up. At least the RL has company. I guess in the mid lux segment the Germans (MB/BMW) still reign supreme. I am still surprised that the G and the IS are not right behind BMW. At least both the TL and the TSX have respectable sales. All the hyperbole, by many on this board, about Acura being doomed due to the new design have no merit. The TL is selling better than the new G37 and the IS.
