5 Speed vs. 6 Speed Transmission

For those who ever drove both 2009-2011 TL and 2012 TL, do you guys feel any difference in the driving experience between the two transmission ?

I am debating whether to get the 2010 TL which is 10k less than the new one or the 2012 ...

You might want give both a test drive. I did not drive the five speed so can't offer a comparison.

To me, the difference was pretty obvious and significant - the 6AT was way better! Much more responsive and even smoother.

Now, if you do a search here you will find a lot of discussion on this topic before, so I would encourage you to do so. Some have posted many numbers and tried to prove that the 6AT was not any better than the 5AT. Let me just say that as a person who has not just driven both vehicles, but who has actually OWNED both vehicles (2010 SH-AWD with 5AT and 2012 SH-AWD with 6AT), the difference is pretty big. You also get better gas mileage with the 6AT too! :-)

I own the 5AT - and will attest the car never should have gone to market without a 6AT. It's plenty driveable, but has the gear ratios of a car that weighs 800lbs less.

The 6 speed would be better unless you can get a screaming deal on a 2010. The money saved would take a long time to be compensated for by gas savings delivered by the 6 spd. Also, in real world driving....which for me means in the city almost always...I seldom get out of 3rd gear.

In real world terms, how is the 6AT doing?

With my 6-6 (6M), I am getting a low of 23 to a high of 25 miles per gallon in normal use.

The more gears the better. If I ever have to replace mine, I'm going to insist on a 6 speed!

I have frequently been getting 525 miles to a tank! This is 95% highway at 75-80mph. Amazing.

I too have been getting over 500 miles to a tank and was pretty amazed. I too do mostly highway but at much lower speeds and with occasional stop and go. I think I have been averaging 26-27 and am very much happy with the 6th gear!

18.5gal x 26 miles Per= 480 miles

But you're filling up at 3 gallons remaining if you're going by the gauge or beating the fuel light, so it's 15.5 gallons x 26 miles per = 403 miles.

To get 500 miles to the tank before the fuel light comes on, you're talking about a 33mpg average, which is doing REALLY good on AWD, and pretty good on FWD
