4G TL SH-AWD Auto or Manual?
What's up.....I'm looking to purchase a 2009 TL SH-AWD aka "Super TL" and I wanted to know which in your opinion would be better, Auto or Manual. Honestly I love both but I just can't make up my mind.

If you haven't already, take each out for a test drive. That'll will probably make up your mind. I'm biased towards the 6MT, as that's what I bought, wasn't even considering the automatic. Still a great car in either transmission, but it I think it really shines when equipped with the manual. Plus it's a heck of alot more fun to drive!

I'll always give a manual the edge in performance...driving venue often makes a difference in selection. By that I mean more metro driving vs hwy. Drove a stick for a long weekend on a jaunt from Allentown to Newark to Allentown to Philly to DC to NYC back to Newark to DC to Philly then Allentown over a 4 day weekend. Charlie horses galore accompanied by arm cramps, LMAO! But what fun was had.

I think the manual option only came out in 2010. 2009 SH-AWDs are auto only.
That being said, I'd take a manual any day. There's nothing like having that connection to your car. And as someone that drives an auto in rush-hour stop and go traffic every day, I miss that third pedal every second I'm behind the wheel of my car. It's gotten so bad that I've resorted to having a ghost clutch

It's really your call. We bought the AT because it's my wifes daily driver and my days of MT's are past me. I consider this car a luxury car and that is why we bought it.
You also tend to beat on a MT more than an AT so the abuse on the car as a whole is also more.
My first Mustang was a 4 speed and boy that car was fun, but I was also young and beat the crap out of that car.
I don't mean to be an old fart, just stating my opinions. Again the ultimate decision is yours.

As others have said, you really need to drive both versions. They feel different, and the transmissions give each a distinct set of powertrain characteristics. They have different steering and suspension settings too, so the handling will differ a bit as well.
In my opinion (biased towards MTs) the 6MT is a sport/luxury car, while the AT is a luxury/sport car.
Both excellent vehicles, but you need to decide which feel you like the best.
But as others have said, if you want the 6MT, you'll need to be looking at a 2010. No MTs in 2009.

The 6MT offers stiffer motor and transmission bushings as well as bigger drive shafts and bearings. I have not had the pleasure to drive it, but it would be tighter, faster, and get better mileage than our 5AT.

I've done the manual thing and while I enjoy, the auto was my call. I didn't buy the TL to autocross or drag race, I bought it to cruise comfortably and enjoy the handling. Living in NY metro area, a stick is a PITA.

I have the 6spd manual and I love it. Working night shift, I don't get caught in Philly traffic all that often. When I do get caught in rush hour traffic, driving that car can really a pain...
Luckily, I do enough driving off hours to make up for the occasional rush hour gridlock...and it's exhilirating

only a decade ago it seemed like every model was a stick shift and an automatic trans was a $1000+ option. now it appears that manual trans cars are almost phased out. it's a shame. i hope the manual trans TL is enough of a sucess where they'll continue to make more
