4G TL owners - do you think that the trunk is too small?

I read in a few reviews that commented on how small the new TL's trunk is, especially considering how big the vehicle is. Also, it is supposedly oddly-shaped according to one review.

For those of you who are 4G TL owners, do you have this same concern? Did you wish that your TL's trunk were larger? Or was it not an issue for you?

I would love to hear some real life feedback on this. Thanks!

I don't own a 4G, I still own a 3G, but the 4G trucnk does not appear to be smal, what it does appear to be is odd shaped and not flat making some of it's usefulness questionable.

I own a 4G and found the trunk smaller than expected. I came from an '06 TSX and could fit my golf clubs in the trunk. I haven't tried this yet on the 4G but I don't think they'll fit without opening the back seat.

I still love many other things about the 4G - just surprised that with the increase in size of the TL, the trunk isn't bigger.

I've seen bigger trunks on smaller cars, but it's no big deal for me. If one needs bigger cargo space, get a SUV or a truck. I've heard that the trunk space are a little smaller on the AWD models than on FWD models due to the differential in the AWD cars.

Correct: 12.5 cu. ft. (TL SH-AWD) vs. 13.1 cu. ft. (TL).

The trunk is fine for me, but I can understand the concern. A 195 inch long sedan shouldn't have a smaller trunk than a 185 in long sedan. The TL just isn't an efficiently packaged sedan. It seems as if it's form first then function.

Ostrich, please get to a Acura dealer and check it out for yourself! Don't listen to other peoples opinions on a topic that is subjective. The trunk is huge for me and my needs, as I went from 3G to 4G. Three grown adults and there golf bags/shoes and a ice chest fit quite comfortably! No concerns here, but if you have more baggage than that on a daily basis get a bigger car.

This is right up there with the gas thread, if you can't afford premium gas, drive another car. The ultimate response, that one killed me...

Back seat does NOT open. Computer designed to keep the uni-body stronger. Yes, golf clubs fit.

I like the new TL a lot, but am disappointed in the trunk size. My 04 Mazda 6, which is 187 in. long and weighs 3100 lb., has a trunk size of 15.2 cu. ft - nearly 20% larger than that of the TL. Additionally, it has fold down rear seats, which the TL lacks. The large trunk and fold down seats have been extremely useful when I have had to pack clothes for three month summer trips. I would think a 195 inch car would have a significantly larger trunk.

This is a funny comparison that was posted on vtec before. It really shows you how inefficient the TL is.

Civic Si vs TL SH-AWD

Cargo Volume (cu. ft., mfr.)
12.0
12.5

Headroom (Front, in.)
38.1
38.4

Headroom (Second-Row, in.)
36.7
36.7

Legroom (Front, in.)
42.2
42.5

Legroom (Second-Row, in.)
34.6
36.2

lol, the Civic has almost the same amount of space in nearly every dimension and here's the startling statistic.

Length (in.)
177.3
195.3

The TL is very inefficient and it's oversized.

I stand corrected! I've only had the TL for less than a week and haven't learned all the features yet.

its all that front and rear overhang. what about width?
trunk is fine for me - I agree - get an suv if you want more. If you want to see a smaaallll trunk - check the Natural Gas powered Civic - I swear there is maybe a foot from the trunk opening - that's it - the fuel storage system takes up the rest of the regular civic trunk space. the hybrid is almost as bad

Very good you admitt. There is alot of inefficiences about aerodynamic drag of TL. alot of hp needed for sustain high speeds.
Another thing about Wheel base which has some effect on ride
Civic has about 105inh compared to 109inch or so for TL. but TL needs 19inch just to look decent which requires very low profile tires so short time for change. Basically you cannot use it as daily driver unless you want to change tires every year.

I think the TL looks good with 18" wheels and standard A/S tires. The 17"s on the base TL, however, look undersized.

The TL looks much better with bigger wheels/tires but that doesn't mean its not functional with the 17's. The ride is actually smoother and softer with the 17's.....and for some TL owners, this kind of ride is more preferable. How can you say the TL is not a daily driver?....by which criteria? Another dumb post coming from a well-known 4G hater.

The 18inh on RL looks much better than 18 star shaped of TL and TL has more frontal area.
for FWD Tech which the majority of buyers will buy they are stuck with 17inch unless they want to spend more to get 18inch.

I think the question is why is there so much wasted space? Where'd did that extra 6 inches go? Having a transversal engine layout should actually make the TL more space efficient not less. The GS is 5 inches shorter and has more room in every dimension. So you can't even blame the sloping roofline for the inefficiencies.

It's actually worse than that. the TL's wheelbase is only 3 inches longer than the Civic's and the TL is a frickin 18 inches longer. It makes no sense. Here's the comparo:

TL is also 74 inch wide. The widest midsize car in its category.

The trunk is more than big enough. It seems to be about 1/4 bigger than my G35x, which I felt was very small. I fit my subwoofer/amp in there and still have room for at least 3, maybe 4 duffle bags or similar baggage.

Saw one at the dealer, I thought the trunk was ok but the layout was kinda funky. Here is a youtube link which talks about the same thing I thought, around 2:40 sec. I really loved the interior space, it was much bigger than I thought. I think its a nice car!!

Pete, in my experiences, the rim size is not the issue, it's the profile and quality of the tire that transfers to a smoother ride. That's just my experience though, is there something technical to prove me wrong as I don't really know that much about it, this is just my experience and feelings on it.

Sure, it's not just rim size. Chasis design, spring rates, shock/strut tuning all contribute to ride quality too. The AWD TL comes with the sports suspension which (along with the bigger rims) contributes to the firmer ride as compared to the FWD model. The trade-off of course is the crisper handling and higher grip in the AWD cars.

Folding rear seats would make up a little bit for having a smaller/odd shaped trunk. I'm disappointed that the TL doesn't have folding seats. A lot of utility is added with this feature and for some people, it's enough to not have to get an SUV. I understand that it's for the uni-body structure, but the feature is an extremely useful thing to have.

Absolutely dead on. I was pissed off when I found out my 05' TL's seats didn't go down, I thought Honda really messed up this one, but I guess I've just become whipped now as this car owns me.

Love that Avatar by the way! You must be the pack leader!

I did make it home w/ an 8' fence post thru the trunk pass through in my 3G once.

I guess the seat not going down helps the structure - which is supposed to help handling, but how can bmw offer the fold down seat as an option?

But hey if I wanted a lot of room I would have bought the mdx. I do wonder if the 6MT TL next year could get the magnetic shocks from the MDX sport?

I don't understand how BMW, Audi and MB could all offer fold-down rear seats as an option. Does it mean that they are less rigid in their body structure, and handle less well than the TL??? Hmm.....

BTW, the TSX has fold down rear seats. Yet, it is supposed to be very safe too... hmm....
