Unless, somehow, Acura/Honda finds a way to get more of the Crank HP to the Wheels.
At 310 HP, SH-AWD, and 4,000 pounds this car could be very slow and bloated.

With 310hp and obvious that the torque won't be there (Say 280 max), then you really have been out gunned by the competition.
340hp is a LOT of hp going through the front wheels, so the Type-S would almost certainly be SH-AWD.
That means the 3.7L 310hp V6 will not be the Type-S (I'm assuming), just another model option in the TL range.
And regarding the TL's competition, I don't think Acura pits the TL against RWD European models...Edmunds states Acura's TL mission as "the TL typically does not deliver the excitement or prestige of competing European sedans; it counters with exceptional value and above-average durability and reliability." I tend to agree. I bought my 2003 TL-S for value/reliability, then performance, and actually didn't even consider the BMW 3-series.

Here is what Car and Driver has abt the '09 TL....
TL: The staff car of real-estate agents will be all-new in 2009. Slightly larger, the TL builds on TSX styling themes with multitiered flanks and a guillotine-like corporate grille blade. A front-driving 3.5-liter V-6 is now the base engine (it was only offered before in the sporty Type-S) and should make about 290 horsepower. The new Type-S, due later in 2009, is expected to rip, with a 3.7-liter V-6 making 330 to 340 horsepower and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive from the RL.

Whatever you do NEVER and I do mean NEVER roll over negative equity into the next car. That only makes the dealers money. Rather, sit tight. Enjoy your 2008 base TL and check back in when you are 34 months into your current lease.

You may not be aware, but it was already revealed that the article you quoted was in error. C&D was mis-representing the AWD version as a potential TL-S model simply because they saw the quad exhaust. They also mistakenly stated the TL-S would come in 2009 when it's pretty much accepted that the 3.7-liter and the TL-S with that kind of HP won't be seen until 2010 (so you still have about 15 months before it would be available (at the earliest)
