4G TL acceleration

Starting to think towards a 4G TL if I can get use to the looks.
Would you guys please rank the relative acceleration of the various 4G TL configurations, slowest to fastest:
FWD Auto
FWD 6MT
SH-AWD Auto
SH-AWD 6MT
And then tell me where a 07/08 TL Type S 6MT would fit in.
Thanks

the 4G is going to be heavier than your 3G....especially if your 3G is equipped with a six speed manual transmission.
acceleration between the models are going to be relatively small with the 3G out edging them at higher speeds...
at lower speeds, let's say 0-60....it's all going to be who can gain traction the fastest...and that would be the AWD models.

so, just as a guess...0-60...
SHAWD - 6MT
SHAWD - 6AT
(I dont believe there is a FWD - 6MT) but your 3G would fit in right here.
FWD - 4G auto

but 0-60 means squat, as ALL of these cars are going to be within inches of each other.....

Yeah, my 3G was an 06 3.2 6MT. Was wanting the 4Gs compared to a 07-08 3G Type S 3.5 6MT

it's going to be very similar 0-60 with a slight edge to the 4G AWD 6MT....but the 07-08 6MT will outtake a 4G at higher speeds. we're talking 80-to-well-into-triple-digits.

but you shouldnt be racing anyways...
and if you care about speed like this...the TL's arent that quick. and there are better cars that will do 0-60 faster, quicker and more in style.

basically, it's a wash. and you shouldnt pick the 4G just over acceleration alone.

you should pick the 4G if you want a better interior, and if you like the looks and if you need AWD...
the 4G uses the same engine architecture that Honda has been using since 1996....

Will the 4G AWD out-handle the 3G Type S?

an AWD vs a FWD...what the heck do you think??

im a 3Ger and one of the problems or limitations of a FWD is understeer.
in a corner, I will go straight into a wall.

with an AWD machine, especially the SHAWD, the car will stay put in a corner...
if you need technical details, google/youtube SHAWD and see for yourself why it's the best in the business

No need to google, we own a 08 MDX SH-AWD. I figured it would out-handle a 3G. I was really wondering if the AWD system sapped much acceleration vs the FWDs

that's 2 different things going on man....
you asked if it can handle...
which the 4G can!!! it's the best in the business.

2nd, if you get the 6MT and rev the fuck out of the car, the awd system will not be so much of a drag...
ive never been in the 6AT SHAWD, so i couldnt comment if that drive train sucks power..

it just seems like you dont know what the mechanical bits do, by your questioning..
you also have the 08 MDX which is a great handler, and if it wasnt so porky...would probably be as fast as the sedans...because it pretty much has identical drive trains...which ALL acura's do..

I know what everything is & does. I just have never driven or ridden in a 4G of any type. They look heavier & bigger than a 3G.
I am trying to get a handle on if the bigger engine & more HP in the 4G more than offsets the heavier weight & drag of the AWD system vs the 07/08 Type S 6mt.
(it would seem that it does)
And if the heavier weight makes the 4G handle like a pig in spite of the AWD system.
(it would seem that it does not adversely affect handling)
And how the AWD system works out with a manual trans. Never driven a manual AWD vehicle.

sounds like you need seat time....

a stranger on the internet can rate cars all they want, what matters more is how it feels under your control.
Go out there and test drive

as my 3G is faster and quicker than a 6MT 4G SHAWD, although in a corner, the SHAWD would over take me..because of the limitations of FWD...
it still sounds like you dont know what the components do from your questioning..

Why didn't you just respond with this answer at first instead off all that other stuff-that's all I was asking. Wreak seems to have understood the gest of the post.
I came on here to ask a few questions about a vehicle I've never driven but might be interested in. Not to get pissy, but if you don't want to respond-that's fine, but I really don't need your lecturing about how I don't "understand the components" of what I'm asking about.

because my 3G TL is modded.

and then, I can equip my TL with super strict summer tires...and it will pull away at from any 4G!!
but do the same with the SHAWD and equip it with super sticky summer tires and it will blow my 3G away

theres just SOO many variables that you, or i, or even WRECk is not accounting for.

that's the thing, I WANT TO RESPOND!! lol
I want to help you out!!
except, if one doesnt understand SHAWD, it would be easier to just watch a youtube video to gain the concept..

the best thing for you to do is get seat time.
so then, you dont have to worry about what is faster or quicker or whatever you are wanting to find out.. as you will have direct experience

4G SH-AWD auto is no speed demon off the line. The reason is solely the transmission. The engine has plenty of power for a car this heavy, but the 6 spd tranny is so pitifully programmed...I had an auto 4G SH-AWD for a few years. It really is a great handler, and comfortable interior. Great stereo. Do not buy it based on power. You will be disappointed. Once moving it gets up and goes, but if you want to be pinned to your seat off a light don't bother.

My 4G with my mods and tune (SH AWD Auto) squats on my buddy's 4G SHAWD Manual bad! Granted that he would be faster if he had the same mods. Shifting on mine is instant, there's no lag. Haven't ran him off the line yet. I can tell you that I've been in a 4G SH AWD auto (not mine) vs the Type S on the freeway an the type s pulled away in the long run due to more top end.

I dont int know what your goal is but if you're looking for good acceleration, both have potential with modifications. If you're looking for a better quality car with better tech features, the 4G is the winner. Especailly if you're interested in AWD which the 3G doesn't offer.

I agree with Justnspace, you want real facts, go test drive one and make the comparison yourself. We can only tell you so much.

Thanks for the info guys.
My problem with the seat time & test driving is that there is NEVER a manual shift TL of any type for sale within 500-600 miles of me. And I don't know anyone with a 6mt TL. The dealership can't clearly remember ever selling a 6mt TL. Apparently, people here in flyover country don't want no stinkin manual shift in their TLs.

I had to pay to ship my previous 06 6mt TL in from Houston after paying to get it checked out.

Be patient, wait for a good used 4G SH-AWD 6MT and you will be handsomely rewarded, it is superior to the 3G in every way. I strongly advice to get an extended warranty.

I have to say the TL SHAWD (3.7) isn't as quick as I thought it would be. I had a 1999 Honda accord coupe 3.0v6 with a CAI and straight exhaust (comparable to a 3GTL) and that car felt faster. I would imagine mass would come into effect here. The TL feels a lot more planted though and it feels safer to go faster in, obviously due to AWD. Mind you I never raced them together but the Acura feels a lot smoother and refined, unlike the grittiness of the older honda.

I have a 2000 Accord V6 (Daily) and my TL would leave it in the dust.

Wink

I have driven both an 09 AWD AT (that I sold) and my current 12 AWD M6. The M6 is much much faster (disclaimer, it has an aftermarket exhaust). Faster both off the line (can chirp tire to 3rd shift) and during downshifts (double) for overtaking slower cars (no shift lag). Once you reach higher gear though, I didn't see much of a difference vs the AT (found out racing another AWD AT).

Don't tell my wife I was racing. LOL.

Sorry, you lost me, which isn't hard to do... What's the "AWD AT"?

Stock to stock, there is a surprisingly large delta between the 0-60 time of the 6MT and the AT in the AWD 4G cars. Maybe as much as a second or even more (with the MT being quicker). Most of the tests were posting 0-60 times for the 6MT of 5.2 to 5.5. I almost bought a leftover 3G MT but couldn't find one I wanted. When the 4G MT came out, I tested one extensively and was blown away by the handling - still am. The combo of the 3.7 with MT and SH-AWD makes for a very nice and enthusiastic driver.

2012 tl shawd automatic owner here. I can tell you the automatic transmission while decently quick to downshift seems to be programmed to limit itself in the lower gears. It feels like slight hesitation. However, with this programming likely to protect the transmission, the AWD has loads of grip and acceleration of the line will leave many cars behind.

I used to own a lancer evolution X and that car was very fast. The awd sh TL feels like 75% of the evo in driving feel. The suspension and overall handling are very good.

Yes the car is heavy but the awd system really makes it feel light on its feet. Going back to other replies in this thread, the power is plenty for daily driving. You can pretty much pull on the majority of cars off the line with the AWD advantage. The top end is where other more powerful cars will take over.

all that being said, I am glad we got the 2012 tl in the awd auto configuration. The engine and stock exhaust note are great for a stock car.

a 6 speed manual will be very rare, but keep looking. I swore off automatic cars after owning nothing but manual cars, but my wife needs to be able to drive the cars we own.

He's comparing an 09 TL SH-AWD automatic to a 12 TL SH-AWD Manual 6 speed

Sorry for the confusion. I was comparing a 2009 TL AWD Automatic Transmission (AWD AT) to a 2012 TL AWD 6 Speed Manual (6M) not M6. Going up against an M6 in a TL will be a foolish choice.
