2012 Gas mileage
2012 Gas mileage
Hi Guys,
My TL has about 2500 miles and I only get 18.5(as per gage) MPG. Is this normal. Is there anything the dealer can do to improve the mileage. Is there anything I can do.
I use 92 or 93 octane gas. My driving is about 50/50 city/highway.
Thanks in advance

my experience is the MID isn't accurate - do your own math next time you fill up and see what you're really at. I'm mostly city and average 19 if I'm not stomping on it. On a 220 mile trip I got 24 according to the MID but after filling up and doing the figures I got closer to 30
Ok I will try that. But what are the numbers supposed to be. And if I am still only geting arount 18MPG is there something I can do or something the dealer can do.

I feel the same why about mpg for these cars. After doing some exhaust up grades i believe its gotten even worse.I had a slight change for the better once i was a bit easier on the gas but all in all i think that AWD cars aren't the best for gas mileage.

city driving varies so wildly depending on where you live. live in a metro area where it's nothing BUT stop and go with idling for hours on end your MPGs will go south.
a better measure of everyone's "city" miles or "mixed driving" is what your avg MPH is in relation to your MPGs. your avg MPH drops to the teens so will your MPGs.
for example:
i have gotten close to 23MPG in my MDX avg 42MPH("mostly" hwy or free flowing rural driving). on the flip side of that: i get 16 MPG, avg 24 MPH ("mostly" city=backroads with lights and some hwy).
in my TL, the same "city" miles yield 18-19 MPG, avg 25 MPH.
there have been reports of owner's mentioning they get 13-14MPG BUT they avg 15 MPH. they then freak out and think something is wrong with their car when it's perfectly normal.
OP- what is YOUR avg MPH based on your MID??? telling us you drive 50/50 or 60/40 or whatever tells us nothing of the true driving conditions your car must endure. "city" driving varies across a wide variety of variables depending on where you live. take a lot of short trips, sit and idle in traffic, "warming" up your car in the AM, leadfoot, stop and go, etc...you get my point i hope. for you, 18mpg based on YOUR conditions is most likely normal for you.

I filled up and calculated the mpg and it have close to the MID. My average MPH is about 28 as per the gage. I do warm up the car and I have noticed that the MPG drops about 0.1 or 0.2 by the time I get in the car.
What is a driver mod?
So would it be safe to say that the MPG is normal.

I'm getting 25.3 mpg and I drive everyday in the parking lot we call the 10 freeway here in LA.
I'm pretty happy with the mpg I'm getting considering I was only getting around 16-17 on my 03 TL-S.
The key to getting good mileage is letting the car roll instead of stepping on the gas when you can't accelerate fast anyways in bumper to bumper traffic.

did you reset your MPH gauge as well at your last fill up?
It's all about he driver. My wife drives ours to work and averages 18. I can drive the exact same route in the car and get 21-22. The best thing you can do to get better mileage is drive 1/4 mile ahead. When you see a traffic light ahead turn red, take your foot off the gas immediately even if you are 500-1000 feet from the light. Anticipate what traffic ahead of you is going to do and react accordingly well in advance.
BTW, I don't buy that the average mpg readouts are not very close to accurate. In today's cars they are measuring the fuel delivered via the EFI very accurately. You are more likely to not fill the tank the same every time and see a bigger margin of error without even knowing it.

Sorry could not help myself
Exactly spot on about driving ahead saving lots of fuel and the brakes as well

And JJS is correct on the car's MPG readout. Think about it - when we hand calculate MPG, we're assuming that all gas pumps shut off at the exact same level each time, regardless of temperature, flow rate, etc., but in fact they don't. The car's computer is far more accurate than a hand reading a normal driver can perform. Just because they are different doesn't mean it's the computer that is inaccurate.
Besides my Subaru, I've always used Castrol Syntec, and I doubt the benefits of better fuel economy. My reasons for using synthetics are not better fuel economy. (FYI: I've been told numerous times that Subaru prefers conventional oil to be used in their H-opposed engines.)
I find that I am averaging around 19 in my 2010 SH AWD 6MT. This is the same that I got in my '05 TL 6mt.
I downloaded the TiresPluss (firestone) App for my android phone and enter in each fill up. It gives me MPG for each tank as well as an overall average since I started tracking.

With about 15K miles, my 2010 6MT is averaging about 25.3 or so (higher in summer, lower in winter) in half freeway/half urban-suburban driving (average speed about 35 MPH).
Today I had my first chance to drive the car for an extended all-highway stint. Driving between 70-77, the car averaged 28.4 MPG with a cross-wind, moderate hills/flats, very little congestion over about 250 miles. I had it on cruise control virtually the entire trip.
I'm pleasantly surprised that a car of this size and capabilities can do this well. Gas mileage is not why I bought the car, but it sure is an added bonus.
