So m1 is pretty much useless? I can only put it in m1 if im at a dead stop and even then it changes to m2 immediately.

Theres a dude on instagram who has videos of him dropping it from m2 to m1 on the regular and flooring it. I know his is not 2012 cuz of the front grill.

Are they different?

'09-11 had a different transmission (5spd), probably with different programming. I can't speak to that for sure as mine is a 2012 as well but 1st gear is the only one the '12-14 models will not hold even in sport mode.

it wont let you downshift into first unless you are almost stopped. But it will let you rev to redline in first if you gas it good from a stop.

Pretty much this. The only exception I've found is on a steep hill. It will sometimes shift down to 1st if you're going slow up a steep hill. Presumable from the grade logic.
