2012 Acura TL TC software update in NH
Hi,
Yesterday just noticed Acura released bulletin in July 7 2016 for 2012 TL TC extended warranty including software update and TC replacement if software would not help. (Information from forum)
Today I brought my TL to sunnyside Acura in NH to update the software. It took almost one hour. then technician told me he could not update the software. this is very new bulletin. and mine is the first
one to update. It requires extra tool or device to update.
They only did the transmission fluid change and will order the device. I will be informed when device arrives in workshop next week.
I hope the software update can help correct the TC lock up logic and prevent TC from failure. I will update the when software work gets done.
btw, the dealer technician drives customers' car including mine into /out very aggressively. even the car is not fully stopped yet, they changed the gear. turn the steering wheel crazily when car is not moving.
sucks

I'm very interested in this. Do you have a copy of the TSB? My dealer mentioned this last week when I had my airbag inflater replaced, but didn't have many details.
I've had my car into the dealer a few times for the wonky 1-2 and 2-3 shifts i.e. shuddering and hesitating and they have not been able to reproduce it. Go figure...to me it is very noticeable. I did the 3 times drain and fill, replaced the filter(had gurgling sound) and replaced all six pressure sensors (easy). It has helped marginally with the shuddering. However, the sensors have improved the shifting points significantly. Will drop gears with a modest press of pedal vs. much further down before.
My 2012 only has 30K on it. So I hope all of the internals are OK.

Mine was done in February. So probably not the latest. I just hate the fact that I could take it in there and they give me the run around about doing a million other things and it wouldn't be covered.

You can print out the TSB and go to visit dealer again.

Sorry about late reply.
dealer said it is very new. I had feeling they could not finish it. then I guessed right.
you can print out TSB. then go to try if they can update it once. Good luck.
I hope it will resolve the TC issue without replacement.
I do not like the car is taken apart. and maybe TC replacement is a big surgery.

I did not print out. But I showed service adviser my cell.
since last weekend visit, they have not contacted with me about their device coming or not.
so maybe wait for notice.
But at first visit, they changed the transmission fluid covered in this extended warranty or TSB

Hi,
I visited them twice, they could not do it because they said they still do not have appropriate device to talk to car.
they will call me when the device arrives. they said it is on the way from Acura.

Went in today looking for the software update. The SA told me that last friday they took that TSB down because it wasnt doing anything. They still diagnosed that I had a TC issue and will be replace it once parts comes in under powertrain warranty.

Hi, which year is your TL? for 2012-2014 TL, the software update was just released at the beginning of July.
Dealer said the software is not gonna help? they are notified by Acura that the TC replacement will be the only solution?
I am still waiting for response from dealer since they could not have it done last two visits in this month
#17
Mine is a 2012 tech. Yes my service adviser said that the TSB from beginning of July was "recalled' because it doesnt work. The one with the software update. This doesn't mean the TCC one doesnt apply.
#18
BTW is TC replacement a big deal? taking car apart seriously?
I really do not like doing this.
#19
It takes a couple of days. I had them still test drive it knowing it was the TC issue since it still under warranty. I don't know of anything else. You should call acura service rep if you are concern. TBH this will probably be my last Acura. Thinking about getting the Lexus GS 350.

TSB 16-040 - Warranty Extension: 2012 TL Torque Converter was revised.
TSB 16-046 - Judder from the Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch was released.
See the 2012 TSB thread for details:

See below from Acura:
REINSTATED: 16-030 Product Update: Software Update for Lock-up Clutch Function
REINSTATED: 16-040 Warranty Extension: 2012 TL Torque Converter
Today, August 3, 2016, Acura reinstated the temporarily suspended service bulletins 16-030, Product Update: Software
Update for Lock-up Function and 16-040, Warranty Extension: 2012 TL Torque Converter in the Service Information
System. There were concerns with VIN Inquiry on iN and software update VIN database mismatches.
The HDS database has been updated with all affected vehicles. Vehicles can be updated or repaired under either
bulletin. Vehicles already fixed under either will not require further action due to this change; claims need to be
processed for the repairs if one was not submitted prior to July 21, 2016.

"The transmission fluid deteriorates quicker than expected when it is exposed to intermittent high heat loads under specific driving conditions. American Honda is working on a software update that will maintain the transmission fluid temperature within the desirable range under all driving conditions and eliminate the potential for this judder. American Honda will revise this service bulletin when the software update is available. Until the software is released, the judder can be fixed by"
above is from bulletin B16-046, if the software is being developed, how the 16-030 is gonna work for updating. below is the revised 16-040, it still says the 16-030 is applicable to this issue. this is very confusing, if 16-030 is working, why they need to develop software based on 16-046. But, good thing is Acura is aware of this problem. I am thinking about Hond/Acura reliability. a lot of people experienced the Honda/Acura good reliability for past years. But however, Honda never has good transmission from his 5 at, 6 at. 3g has recall on 5at. 2003-2007 accord also had problem on this 5at. 4g 5at and 6at. TLX zf 9at, 8dct may have also. Honda is so excellent on building engine, why they can not build a good tranny with decent amount of gears.
16-040(revised)
"There are two service bulletins applicable to this issue: • 16-030, Warranty Extension: 2012 TL Software Update for Lock-up Clutch Function – Update the software in the vehicle. • 16-040, Warranty Extension: 2012 TL Torque Converter - Replace the torque converter. Do 16-030 first to update the vehicle. If the judder returns after updating the vehicle, the torque converter may need to be replaced; refer to the INSPECTION section of this bulletin."

Dealer said my 2012 is not covered under 16-030 or 16-040. However, mine does fall in the VIN range of 16-046. I did do the three times drain and fill myself in May with Honda fluid. Symptoms have only worsened.
#23
this is what I am confused, if 16-030 is not eligble for you, which is software update. But you fit in 16-046 which is fluid flush and software update(it is developing). So two versions of software will be there for TC?
#29
#31
for 16-040, the fluid flush because if replacing the TC, flush which 3 times drain needs to be applied.
the scenario you took software update and flush which is more like 16-046(if the software applied to 16-046 is done).
you think they did for you is 16-030 and part of 16-040?
#33
So, if 16-030 was not working for you, the you did the fluid flush, the judder gone. I think maybe you need to revisit dealer when the software mentioned in 16-046 has been done.
#34
In 16-046, it states the judder is because of fluid temperature, the fluid flush will fix the judder for now. but developing software will finally fix it.

I am glad you have the issue fixed. It is an annoying one. Can you keep us posted if you feel anything on tranny?
also my point is that
16-046 is for certain vins, but in the bulletin, it says the fluid temperature causes the judder, the flush will temporary fix judder until software update is available. so the 16-030 wont help. The 16-030 is not going to fix the temperature issue, they flush your tranny, then judder is gone. so it is a temporary fix because software mentioned in 16-046 has not been done.

They flushed your transmission or did 3 times drain and refill?

I've been dealing with this TC judder for a year now with 40k miles 2012 TL fwd. Acura dealership and techs stated cannot duplicate the problem. They also sent it to Acura Corp. tech line and they said everything is normal. The TSB mentioned above, my VIN does not fall in any of them but I have a bad vibration and judder from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. The car also lurches forward coming from a stop. Is my car part of the extended warranty for the TC? Any suggestion what actions to take?

The way I understand it, the TC extended warranty should show up on a recall check when logged into a myAcura account. Mine did not show up in that account. I also called the Acura help line and my VIN did not show up as covered. Maybe your dealer can tell you.

I did a 1x3 today and it helped significantly. The fluid that dropped didn't look terrible, but it was due to be changed. There is still some vibration but it is barely noticeable. I haven't been able to really drive my car since I purchased it last week. Today feels much improved. I'm going to drive it for the week and keep an eye on how it behaves and do another 1x3 next weekend. If the minor vibration still exists, I'll make an appointment with the local dealer for the software update.
