I hate to say it, but I've seen the Kia in person-it's pretty damn hot....

If I were buying just for the looks I would say the Kia is pretty cool looking. I see Optima's all over town and I live on an island! However, because I still have concerns over their long-term reliability it's still Acura for me. My daughters year-old Sorrento has already been in the shop twice for electronic issues.

Too bad they don't drive like the TL. From what I can gather they drive similiar to the sonata, which is too bad. I rented one for three weeks and the wallowy suspension started to get to me after a while.
So IMHO if you want a nice looking inexpensive car that drives so so with a bunch of goodies, get a Kia.

Look, the Kia even has folding side mirrors.
But thanks, I still prefer my 4G TL.

They've done a nice job of styling the Optima and loading it with a bunch of stuff and selling it cheaply.
Unfortunately, it seems that they place they skimped is all important vehicle dynamics (and maybe reliability, but too soon to tell).

Kia looks great, and lots of 'stuff' for the money.
Don't know about the 2.0L turbo, but without the turbo the 2.0L, while fairly peppy, is under-powered .... WAY under-powered compared to a TL or similar.
Great engine for Civic. For good-sized sedan, not so much. IMHO.

Well..welll the Kia thread again.
I can speak from personal experience. I was the not so proud owner of '12 Optima SX premium touring model. That car was the WORST car I ever had! It looks great, lots of 'cool' features. I drove for it for only 30 days and traded it for the TL and couldn't be happier.
The KIA has a terrible on center steering feel, felt like was sliding all over the road. Just horrible on a long commute. Extremely loud wind/tire noise. My driver's side mirror and passenger seat would vibrate violently at HWY speed..took it the dealer: this was NORMAL for the car..really??
The transmission was OK but the powertrain despite all the good press did NOT feel like 274hp. Had this weird 'elastic feeling' when revving, sort of like pulling apart a rubber band. Had weird smell of oil after a redline shift...dealer says burning oil is COMMON for turbo engines?? I know it has a 100K warranty...but the turbo/Direct injection technology has not been truly tested yet. Look at all the Audi/VW owners having issues with carbon buildup..you really think the Koreans have figured this out when the Germans have had DI+turbo engines for almost a decade and they still can't get it staright.
Anyways...the Hyundai/Kia family have great curb appeal and features for the $$$...but they cannot be compared to the Japanese cars of their class. Don't even mention the German makes in the same breath as the Korea cars.

I bought one of the Turbo Sonatas for the wife (same thing as the Kia). Complete electric failure day 3, car shut off in the middle of the road and had to have the keyfob docked to limp home with no power accessories. Went back to the dealer and made them take it back. P-O-S.

These are a really terrific looking car, and do have better driving dynamics than the Sonata platform mate, but both cars suffer from lacking in that regard. Great style, long warranty, killer features. But the steering, ride, handling, etc. don't match the image. Though, if you're comparing to lower vehicles in a similar class like the Camry, Accord, etc. the difference is less and they feel more impressive.
Compare to others, and that "ah, now I understand why the price is so much lower...it looks nice but doesn't drive like it looks". I've heard that line 4x in the past year when having had a few clients try the Sonata and Optima in comparison to a TSX or TL, Certified and new. One in particular was all set on a Sonata based on research, but then after driving it she couldn't deal with the drive. I remember her specifically. "It looked so great from reviews but then we drove it twice at 2 different dealers, and just couldn't make myself like it. It's a lot less pricey but it feels that way too."
Nice cars, but compared to Camry, etc.

Thought these two cars competed with the Honda & Toyota mids but the Genesis was the TL’s competition car price wise from Hyundai/Kia group. That’s why the Kia is so much cheaper, its not an apples to apples thing.

Correct. If anything to be compared, it is Genesis to TL, and even then there are differences.

The Optima is an impressive looking car and it is built well, very good fit and finish and accessory level, great engine......but the dynamics are a bit lacking if you are looking for a sport sedan...
I see a bit of potential overlapping only with the FWD TL (definitely not the SH-AWD) but the TL feels a bit more substantial...
