12VDC Outlet Rating

Hey guys,

Going camping and I purchased an air mattress inflating pump that connects to the 12VDC outlet in our cars. The air pump is rated for 6A running at 12A surge on activation of motor.

Does anyone know what our 12V outlets are rated to? Also, I know there are 3 different 12V outlets that I could find (1 in center console, 1 inside center storage and 1 in trunk)... are all of them rated the same? Or one more powerful than another?

Thanks in advance!

something like this that is rated at 12.5 amp

The accessory power fuse is 7.5A so if your pump surges at 12A there is a good likelihood that you will blow it.

Why not connect the pump directly to your battery with the engine off?

^^^ I actually just had to replace both of my fuses for the outlets in the cabin (blew them while using a compressor to inflate my tires). They are 15A, not 7.5A.

WOW, thanks guys. You just saved me from making a fool of myself. I cancelled order and just purchased a manual hand pump. Love this forum.

Oh and I think I was mistaken about the 12VDC outlet in trunk. I confused it with the MDX I was fancying which I believe has one in the cargo area.

My bad, the fuses are 7.5A on my 3G. I assumed they had the same amperage on the 4G.

Edit: Just checked the 3G and 4G manuals and the required fuses are 15A...When I had to replace it a while ago on my 3G, there was a blown 7.5A fuse in so I think the previous owner must have used the wrong fuse.
