'05 TL - Upgrade to what?

I have an Black 05 TL which I bought new, with the OEM ground effect kit and installed black rims on. I still love the car, but it's coming up on 90k miles, so I figure it's time to get a new ride. My current thinking is that a 2011 RL for ~$30k is better bang-for-buck than a new 2014 TL for ~$40k.

Thoughts?

90k miles is a new car. Engine brake-in almost done.

With the smoking deals one could get on the 14 I would at least investigate inventory and prices. I picked up a 14 tech for 34k a month ago.

90 K miles, you still love the car, drive it. Save what would be your payment so when you need a car cash will be in hand.

i would honestly say go for the RL...I love my TL but would have seen some amazing mods done to RLs, seem to have a bit more modding potential

Yup, why go in debt for something you already have? Mine has 98K and I plan on driving it til it's completely fried (105K service is done and it should be good for another 105K miles).

If the 3G is minty & and you love it there's no reason to change. If you desperately want something new and those are your choices, I'd buy a 14' TL since they're heavily discounted. Considering the prices they're (4G's) are going for the RL is not a bargain.

I would keep it and save up more money of needed. Then when the 3G is really shot then get rid of it and buy the new car with cash. You can get a 4G for close to 30 grand right now. The inventory is very slim right now though.

OP have you driven the 4G TL or 2G RL? The 4G TL has a much firmer ride and has a sportier character than the RL. I test drove a 2G RL and it didn't do anything for me.

Having said that, I would agree to keep the 3G TL unless you are itching for a new ride and you don't have to take out a large loan.

Keep it.

Buy/Lease another fun car: 435i, 235MSport, Z4, Boxter, 370z, etc. You get the idea.

Thanks for all the votes!

Why do you think the options will be much better in 3-4 years? Wouldn't that be true of any given time if you wait 3-4 years? Anything special going on with cars (or Acura's specifically) right now?

I kinda get what he is saying, some models will have changed, maybe not Acura models. But something new all together, hopefully by then the TLX will have a larger engine option. Also in 3-4 years your trade will be worth less. Personally I would drive it till it dies.

You may want to hold out for a test drive in a TLX. I like my CPO 5 speed KB2 RL but, hated the 6 speed auto TL loaner. My vote is for a CPO RL. If it is too soft, there are a few coil over kits and springs available. I am now waiting for a CPO RLX hybrid after the test drive. I will likely be waiting for a while as they are not for sale yet.

How much does a trade in value drop from 90K to 110K?

I don't think an '11 RL is vastly different from what you have... Pretty much the same engine as the TL-S, pretty much the same transmission, about the same side as a TL...

Those last bunch of years you milk out of your paid off car are where you get all the value... Trade in value isn't going to be wildly different

Not much, especially as compared to a couple years of car payments.

I'd get the 4G TL over the 2G RL. As for keeping the 3G TL vs getting the 4G TL. If the 3G TL does everything you want it to do, then I would keep it a little longer (maybe 2-3 years). Although you will need a timing belt service done soon (105K).

My 06 has 94K miles, if I'm smart I'll keep it 10 more years. Keep it if it works, it's not like you're driving an old hoopty that anyone would be embarrassed to be seen in. Then again I don't know your income so if you want something newer/flashier that's up to you

I was kind of in the same boat. Just came out of an 03 CL Type S 6 speed with 135,000 miles. Had it for 8 years and it was still very clean...just ached for something new. Bought a 2014 TL SH-AWD Advance Package. Sticker was $47,001, got it for $39,000 heavily discounted because the new TLX will be out soon. Love the car and felt like I saved quite a bit on it.
