Should I keep waiting for the MDX Type S?

I did reserve at two local dealerships via Acura.com reserve. I still haven’t received any info on when they’ll be delivered. I called the dealerships and they also don’t know and were guessing it might be some time in January or February. I sold my car last month and was in process of buying an MDX A-Spec, had one reserved until the Type S news came out. It’s been tough to share one car at home with the Mrs… as the days go on I’m growing more anxious :/ I’m really considering whether I should bow out of waiting for the Type S and just settle for the A-Spec? With the chip shortage craze and all should I make the safer bet? What do you guys think?

What do you drive now? What other cars are you considering? Are they available?

We were in the same boat as you. We were waiting for the Type S to be released but then we were told by our Acura contact that it was being delayed until early spring. He also said to expect a markup over MSRP.

We decided to go with the PMC instead for the time being since we couldn’t wait for the Type S.

I think the A Spec is a solid choice, it would also make your daily life easier with your current car situation.

The 4th gen MDX Type-S might be the last I.C.E. MDX oil burner if Acura make the transition to 100% EV like they want starting in 2024/2025. The Type-S could be available the entire 4th Gen model run OR die at anytime after this 1st run. Any way you could get the Aspec now; but, keep you place in line for the Type-S? You won't have any issue selling or trading in your Aspec if you wanted to upgrade to the Type-S.

My local dealer just received a build date for late January for their first MDX Type S. They are on the way and will start trickling out soon.

Pre orders should arrive before dealer models so would expect those with pre-orders to get a build date any day now. Delivery after build date is typically 21 days depending on destination location.

So much for hitting dealerships by mid-December, eh? I have an Advance in the queue originally scheduled for March/April back in early November, but given the 6 week slip, sounds like May/June at this rate.

Hoping the delays have had a positive impact on quality and are mostly due to some engineering adjustments based on issues found with the MDX's already on the road. I would expect a lot of pressure on the company to make the Type S a home run right out of the gate. Wouldn't be surprised if jobs and bonus' are on the line.

Looks like Acura updated their website to now say “Late December”. Also have updated the search inventory tool to show Type-S as a package option. Maybe the delay won’t be too long for reserved type s?

Yeah, maybe the slip was only a week or two and they’re still on track for March/April for me.
Nice to see they’ve finally published the pricing.

I just picked up my '22 RDX A-Spec/Adv from my dealer of many yrs...and many Acuras. My New Car Mgr just laughed at the mid Dec as Acura has been saying. He says the
delay is more like pre-Spring possibly. NO Acura vehicles can be ordered in Dec. There are NO allocations for any Acura model in Dec. TLX Type S is way behind. But, not
just an "Acura thing." Most all new veh. are suffering, in need of inventory. I'm waiting to order the TLX, and he had 1 allocation in Nov. and now zero for Dec. I'm #3 on the wait
list to order. No idea when I'll get to order one. March maybe?? Oh well, I wouldn't drive it in the winter nasty conditions anyway.

I took my TLX Type-S into my local Colorado dealer for service today, and sales said "for sure. Late spring. Everything has been delayed. I'd guess February earliest, but March most likely" for MDX Type-S.

Now the Acura press release says arriving soon. Wonder which is accurate, as there don't seem to have been any press drives, etc. either--unless those are what will be sent first, and that will happen soon? Possible.

Well technically speaking, St. Patrick’s and Easter are both holidays. So it could arrive around those “holidays”.

Sean said...NO Dec. arrival for the Type S. Acura's web site keeps changing the "date." Earlier said.."mid Dec."....now late Dec......but, they are behind due to all the problems and issues,
as most other manufacturers are faced with.

The dealer I've heard from has 1 build-date of 1/23 and 3-4 more spread across Feb and March. They typically see a 21 day delay between build date and delivery date to the dealership.
Based on the build date would expect late Feb as the first test-drive model to arrive, and then March April arrivals for the additional sellable units.

The pre-ordered 500 units were supposed to arrive ahead of the ones that can be sold. not clear whether they will arrive before the test-drive unit though.

If similar to the TLX Type-S, deliveries should start fairly close to the "journalist day at the track". I recently saw a Kirk Kreifels video where he said he was supposed to drive it in January at some event.

If delivery is similar to the TLX Type-S, then it would be summer til the SUV can be delivered in meaningful numbers to retail customers.

Yes. My dealer told me "yours was updated to say Estimated Build Date of 1/23-1/27 so should be in that range and delivered in February.

Interested to see...maybe this month (?) when they do a press event, drives, etc.

My dealer called me and stated mine would arrive later this month, but they did not provide me a build date. I guess time will tell. I was hoping the test drive units would arrive last week, but not the case.

Per my dealer deliveries are to start a week after demo units arrive - "They pushed our Demo car out until the 2nd week of January and the Demo unit is supposed to arrive just before the first "500"."
Could be a January delivery for some lucky ducks.

Just spoke to my dealer to inquire and share what I've heard. Their ETAs for the first units have been pushed to mid-February at this point and didn't sound too optimistic about those dates. The dealership here at the coast is relatively small, but part of a much larger group. Just my .02 to share.

Our dealer indicated that we should see the first one hit up this month....hopefully this hasnt changed. Considering swapping out the Tech for this version. (Be nice if the towing capacity increases as well.)

Mine is suppose to come in by the end of the month. But stupid dealer just told me they are going to be charging market adjustments. I called all the dealers around my way and they are all doing it. I’m just going to go with an a-spec and get a type-s in the future when all this market adjustment/supply shortage craziness goes away.

No idea where you're located. Sorry to hear, but that's not the case here at all. Happy to put you in touch with my dealer if you don't want to pay over sticker.

I figured it would be too rich for my blood and I went for the A Spec. I’m glad I did. See the price and it’s too rich for my blood. And paying a market adjustment isn’t for me. Paying sticker price isn’t for me either but it’s either I walk out with no new MDX or pay sticker. The dealer worked on my trade in and gave me a good number so it balanced out slightly.

Right now, it’s hard to justify that much for a car especially since I have a toddler and I’m going to do my best to keep it in clean condition but everyone that has a toddler knows, it’s not easy. My A Spec is within my budget. The Type-S would throw me off my monthly budget.

Thats awesome, how exciting! Do you remember what date you got on the reservation list? I think it opened 11/4 and was closed by around the 7th.

Also what color combo did you get? (wonder if they build them by color before they move on to the next color)

I am getting Red with the ebony interior. I did not reserve mine - I figured the wait would be ludicrous so went to get an A-spec. I asked what was the fastest one I could get delivered (my car went kaput) and he said they just got a build date on their first Type S. He said this was going to be on the truck with Dealer demo models and I would more than likely have the 1st one in the southeast. I am excited for it for sure!

I spoke to my dealer yesterday and my build date was pushed to 1/20-1/24, so now we’re looking at February. She also checked their demo and it got pushed a week. She expects that to be in the week of the 17th.

May want to try Escondido if you haven't yet.
Not sure how they'll be selling their first non-reserved units but they should have 4-ish coming soon.

That's interesting. I am also in Middle Tennessee and we have only one Acura dealer. I am being told that they can't even order mine yet (Advance Apex Blue / Orchid) and the demo unit won't be in until the end of month at earliest. It will be an Advance Apex Blue with Ebony Interior. They tried to sell it to me instead until they discovered it was their demo. They also promised I would be the first call to test drive the demo unit. I wonder if we are talking about the same dealer? I have bought multiple Acura's so they usually try to take care of me.

Confirmed it is the same one - the demo unit they are not allowed to sell for I think 45 days. Mine is supposed to be arriving with that one.

They're on order & allocated, and need reserved. It's not usually a "I'll just wait to see one that didn't sell" early on, routine.

Have you asked dealers which ones they have left on their allocation lists to reserve? That's the way to do it.
