MDX Real World Fuel Economy

Just purchased my MDX AWD yesterday (pick up tomorrow) and I'll document my mileage here for sure. I traded in a '14 Explorer with a similar sized V6 and it averaged about 18 around town and maxed out at ~ 24 on a trip doing mostly 70 mph.
I guess I should decide and stick with an octane level as the consensus seems to be that hi test will improve mileage a bit. In researching I realized that this is a heavy car, about the same as my explorer and about 300 pounds heavier than the Telluride and Highlander that were competitors, however the 10 speed transmission should improve the mileage a bit I would think.

I’m only a 3G guy, but if you’ll allow a couple thoughts. (I had an ‘18 FWD and now have a ‘20 SHAWD)
i keep my AC temp set to “low.” That prevents auto stop/start from operating.
While closer than other vehicles I’ve owned, the X computer is still optimistic. As there’s a calculator on my iPhone, I calculate every fill up. Without exception. To me, this is a way to keep up with the overall “health” of my vehicles. Taking their temperature, as it were.
On responsible highway trips (generally maintaining 72-74mph) I can hand calculate 26mpg +/- a fraction. 93 octane, top tier exclusively. 16k miles currently (2020).

So I just purchased the 2022 tech MDX FWD, and so far I’m averaging 22.5 mpg after 3 fill ups.
I drive in normal mode, and I would say I’m 50/50 between Highway and local.
I’ve been extremely pleased with the gas mileage and I fill up on 87 octane and drive slightly on the conservative side.
We had a 2019 RDX tech FWD and that thing had way worse gas mileage than our new MDX. But… the RDX was traversing through west LA and the MDX is stretching its legs on the long windy and hilly Atlanta burbs.
Overall my initial impressions of the MDX are very favorable. It’s not super premium but has what we need at a fair price point. 3rd row is usable, and we love the removable middle seat in the 2nd row.
One thing I think most prospective buyers will appreciate from the new MDX is it’s planted and stiffer frame. Feels extremely well built and rigid without being bone jarring.

Averaged 24.5 mpg highway covering two mountain passes each way with only 700 miles on the odometer. Very pleased and it’s not even broken in yet! Premium unleaded, 70+ miles per hour, two occupants, ice cooler, two suitcases and other small items. MPG’s were hand calculated and matched the vehicle odometer MPG figure!

Vichardy, I'm no car engineer, however, reading much material about MPGs for all cars, and somewhat familiar with the Gov't regs on MPGs, all or most car makers are including the Auto Off feature to Tweak Out extra Fractional MPGs. You have to keep in mind the "wonderful" Gov't , in that, all car makers must Meet MPG marks. Not on specific models , but on their respective Fleets. So, if they (Acura, etc.) can Tweak out an extra .5 MPG because tested vehicles include that "gas saving" feature, the car mKers can meet their requirements across the Board on their Fleets of all models. I. E., 21 MPG on the new 2022 MDX , 23 on the 2021 RDX, etc. so analyzing the entire Acura Fleet of cars, some more than 21 and some few others under 21 , hey will meet the Overall requirement for the current generation. What I am not sure of , is that also including Honda with Acura. Throw the Hybrid models and There You Go, they meet the numbers...on Average.

I can't comment on the 2022 MDX (I'm in the midst of a possible new one to replace my 2019 MDX Advance [lease expires next June ]), but as others posted here, I did see an improvement in my MPGs after a 1K to 2K miles driven. In retrospect, I "regret" that I didn't opt for the Sport Hybrid MDX Advance in 2019. There is a 2020 Hybrid too. Add'l 35 HP and 25 or 26 overall MPGs (I think ?). I originally used my 2019 MDX to commute to Long Island Employer from Westchester county , NY , 85 miles round trip each day , 5X a week. In March 2020, COVID stopped that (so aside from the Chinese Virus threatening our Health, working from home with No Commuting was a welcome variation for awhile). In general, W/O Trafiic ( at least not major stop and go traffic), I would see 26 MPGs doing 65 MPH. City numbers much less.around 15-16 MPGs.... and that's REAL CITY numbers - real Suburban driving, not the EPA testing of City MPGs which is fictional, done in a Vacuum. Now retired, doing only local trips with the occasional south Jersey trips to see the grandkids (300 Miles round trip) , 20.7K Miles on the Clock, I will get (yesterday in fact), 25.8 MPG (the car's computer) and I was doing 80+MPH for much of the trip - Until I get close to the GW Bridge. Local MPGs are 15 - 16 generally.
My perspective on the MPGs for these size vehicles, not meaning to insult anyone, is You really don't get these SUVs for mileage numbers. The quoted 21 Overall for the 2022 is the same as the 2019. Even though the 2022 is heavier, perhaps the 10th gear in the AT helps to tweak out the same MPGs? I test drove the new MDX...... at 69 YO, I'm battling my OCD due to the "new Car Bug bite". It's a very nice SUV and seems to offer a great value compared to the typical Bimmers, Audis,Mercedes, and Volvos. Good Luck with your Great New MDX !!!

Danny, nice concise review comments. My 2019 MDX can run on 87 Octane, however, I almost always use 93 . It gets better mileage with 93 and runs "better"... Afterall, the classic 3.5 Honda engine is designed to run on 93 for max benefits. Good Luck with your New Ride. I'm working on a new one now. Hopefully, today I make my deal to replace my 2019. I don't really need a new 3rd Row SUV, and at this stage of my life (69 YO - retired, but some spinal disabilities), with no more commuting - after 48 years - 75% of driving commuting due to various jobs and their locations - My Car (the wifey has a 2016 CRV) is used for local jaunts and a few drives to see grandkids in South Jersey. BUT, after test driving and watching YT reviews for the last 6 weeks, I have been Bit by the New Car Bug. the 2022 offers good room and great comfort. Really like the enhancements to the Tranny , handling, second row adjustability , Panamatic Sunroof, the digital displays, and dashboard with a HUD (Advance model for Me), however, Acura is sooooo remiss sticking with the Touch Pad design that their engineers for some reason believe is preferable to Touch screen, even better it should have been BOTH (Genesis) . That will be a Learning curve for me. Good Luck with your New Acura!!

Esym, that's very good. I presume in Normal Mode. How do you all "feel" the automatic Suspension/ Ride Dampening? In my 2019 MDX Advance, which is outfitted with 20" Wheels , 265/45 Michelein tires. When switched to Sport Dynamic Ride - the steering and handling and Tranny get more "sporty" and the ride stiffens. With 45 ratio tires, it becomes too harsh on the rough roads (plenty of those in the NYC Metro area). When I had a MDX Loaner with 50 ratio tires, it was immediately evident that the ride wasn't as harsh. If you set the Dynamic Drive mode to Sport and the Tranny to Sport Drive, it transforms the entire vehicle. I Believe the new Auto Dampening system is just that - always engaged.

Almatti, yes I found the sport mode too harsh, especially on winter bumpy roads (think frost heaves). I use the normal steering mode and got used to it OK. Not as much feedback (it's electric) as I'd like but it's OK.
I like the better with Michelin LTX better and switch out the Bridgestones at some point.

Just went on a short road trip of around 500 miles and averaged almost 24 mpg in individual mode( mostly sport with normal drivetrain) with ac on the whole time. I was pleasantly surprised. Also with a lead foot…

Gonzo23, Nice.... I just got my new 2022 MDX Advance.. Whatta Car, one of the best I've had and I have had a lot of them at 69 YO. So far with only 83 miles on , on the B trip setting which is the original setting from Dealer with full tank of gas, 16.5 MPGs, with mostly suburban driving. That's about the same my 2019 achieved. The 2019 would get around 25-26 MPGs on the highway and I was easily doing 75 MPH on The Jersey Turnpike.

Jujhar, what Octane fuel did you use? Regular - which is 87 Octane around here in Metro NY , 89 ( or maybe 91 - have to look today) Octane which is Mid Grade around here or 93 Octane which is Premium? I had always used 93 Octane in my 2019 which I traded in for the new 2022 MDX Advance I took delivery on 8/20/21. I can't stop SMILING about my new car. I'm still like a 12 yeqr old at XMAS, yet I'm 69 YO (soon to be 70 in October). I am retired and I can't wait to go out and buy the Newspapers (Notwithstanding the Moronic News of the day ), and go for a ride.

So far, I'm averaging 19.9 mpg w/ city & highway driving on Octane 93 after about 1250 miles in Normal mode, SH-AWD.
#69
It sounds like people are getting 20-22 mixed driving in normal. So 16 in sport is a large decrease.,,.25% nearly….interesting that holding gears long has that much of an impact.
#70
I also noticed that in sport mode the RPM's are higher - even just cruising. Maybe that has some effect.
I'm averaging about 24 mpg cruising on the hiways at 70 mph in normal mode using 91 octane.

I'm pretty disappointed in my '22 MDX mpgs.
I came from a '19 MDX Advance 2wd. My average was 19.5 mpg. over the course of the two years I had it.
I have had my '22 MDX Advance AWD for a little over 2 months now. I have 1500 miles on it and it's averaging 15.2 mpg.
I am driving it exactly like I drove my '19. Mostly short trips for me, as my work is less than 2 miles from home and my kids come with me to work (teacher.) One extended highway road trip every other month or so. One to two local highway drives each weekend. I use premium gas. I drive it in the default mode, I don't like the jerkiness of sport mode.
I reached out to my dealer this week to see why I have such low mpgs.

- You went from 2WD to AWD.
- The MDX is heavy.
- Engine is still breaking in.
- Winter temps and gas.
- New Acuras across the lineup have not been living up to the advertised MPG numbers, even RDX owners are getting 15 MPG in the city so well under the advertised numbers.

Seems normal to me because:
- You went from 2WD to AWD.
- The MDX is heavy.
- Engine is still breaking in.
- Winter temps and gas.
- New Acuras across the lineup have not been living up to the advertised MPG numbers, even RDX owners are getting 15 MPG in the city so well under the advertised numbers.
[*]The MDX is heavy (same engine as previous gen).
I shudder to think what the Type S real world economy will be!
