2022 MDX Type S Gas Mileage?
2022 MDX Type S Gas Mileage?
*Disclamer* I know this is not a car to own because of efficient gas mileage.
But for my fellow owners, I have my MDX Type S (Advance) for about 2 months now and at first I didn’t pay any mind to it but I notice a full tank (18 Gallons?) was giving me an estimated 260 miles. After owning for a while I notice now when I fill up it’s about 225 miles estimation. According to Acura the Type S is suppose to get 17 City/ 19 Average/ 21 Highway. Sticking with the average and 18 gallons capacity I should be seeing 342 miles estimation. Are you guys experiencing the same?

I am getting about 15.9 MPG in the Type S. My 5.0 V8 2017 crew cab F-150 gets the same mileage but uses regular gas lol. Its abysmal gas mileage for a 3.0, luckily its not a daily driver. Wife uses it mostly a day or two.
Here is another MDX Type S gas mileage thread from the MDXers Forum.

Let's just say I'm not shedding a tear for any owners here complaining about the fuel economy since we had plenty of hints from the regular MDX and the TLX Type S vs regular TLX mpg.
I thought the "estimated" mileage from the computer was based on system analyzed driving habits. So if you drive aggressively say in Sport+ it will calculate a much lower full-tank expected mileage than if you feather the gas in Comfort mode. Or something.. That makes it a SWAG. Not clear how large a dataset is used to come with those but would expect at least the last tank full.
In other words ymmv.

Nothing beats noting miles driven on the trip computer divided by gallons replenished at the pump followed by reset of trip computer (rinse, wash, repeat). This is the best indicator because it ignores short-term transients.
I just pumped a full tank (Shell/91) and I get 277ish mileage. Not sure what I was thinking when I typed 220ish Lol. Also, because I live in Northern California, my MPG is not really great because of the traffic, hilly and etc... so kinda suck.
I have a 2022 Non Type S , MDX Advance since August 2021. I use Premium gas , except for 2 occassions using 1/2 tankfuls of Regular (so I have never evaluated the MPGs using a Full tank of Regular). As a Retiree since May 2021, my MDX is driven only by me (the wife has her 2016 CRV), used at a 80-85% Local Suburban (Westchester County , NY ) to 15-20 Highway ratio. Despite what 1 and other posters declare that the best calculator is Pencil and paper mathematical calculations (Ok, you can use a e-calculator
), I find the car's MPG Trip calculator to be very close to actual experience. I use the Trip B calculator to be an Overall MPG calculator that I reset when I do Oil changes. The current numbers On The Board with about 1900 miles on the Trip B clock is 16.3 MPGs. Human Psychology is a very Funny thing (at 70.5 Yeasr Old one tends to learn m ore about that as you go). I got my 2022 MDX on an early Lease termination deal last August [trading in my 2019 MDX Advance]. Did I need a 3 Row SUV ? No , not really. Child / Baby Car seats for 2 ( 2 of the 5 Grandkids are local, the other 3 are not) are in the CRV. But, I enjoy feeling comfortable and Loved the Redesign of the 2022, Inside and out, the enhanced handling and the 10sp AT and despite the TTP InfoT. system, so I went for it knowing the so-so MPGs. In August with $3.39 per gallon for Premium gas. Now at $4.79 +/- a gallon (and probably rising ), the Psyche is rattled and questioned. Not being a person where gasoline prices are only a pitenence, and of not worthy of a second thought, the Higher Price for Gas is In Your Face. Albeit, the Type S was not available in August, if it was, and I test drove it (I'm sure I would have been thrilled with the greater HP and Torque and more), knowing me, I would have given the Type S some serious consideration. I'm sure it is seductive and would have been "Winking" at me with a furvor, but if the lease numbers were put in fromnt of my face, I would have Snapped out of it.
I do tend to ramble off topic. Sorry for that the EOD, the even nlower MPGs would be giving me angst based on the way I drive the car. If i were still working and using it as a comuter car, that may have swayed me in the S Directiion. Human Psychology is a very Funny Thing!
Now, if there were a Hybrid version like 2019 & 2020, with nice Bump in HP & Torque, instant response, same quality handling, etc.& 15-20% better MPGs... Bingo - No Brainer.

I'll give you my take on the first three fill ups on my Type S Advance. I am fortunate enough to live in a small town in SE WI. So, most of my miles are country roads or Interstates to visit children and grandchildren. I'm an old fart but still like driving capable cars. First tank from dealer 16.5 mpg. Next fill was 20.2mpg, third was 19.6 and last was 20.4. I have a 2011 Advance MDX w/150k miles in FL and did a highway road trip. About the same 20 mpg. I'm happy with my purchase, not the fastest SUV around but a very satisfying car.
The gas mileage in my Type S is a bit better than my 2010 MDX, especially so on the highway. Could it be better? Certainly.
What pisses me off is that the Type S gas tank is three gallons *smaller* than the 2010! What dumbass came up with that idea? Those three gallons only weigh about 18 pounds and the lack of them reduce the total range of the vehicle by 45-60 miles.

Hey, Don't fret this.... Think of it that Now with the artifical, temporary Federal Gov't tax reduction by "suspending" taxes on gasoline, you will be able to buy "cheaper" gas sooner. I would assume with your Type S, you are using Premium Fuel. So, for now, you will be able to buy Premium @ $5.59 instead of $5.79 for a few weeks!!
