Yokohoma Avid W4 245/45-17 or 235/45-17 ? Snowy area !
Hi guys. Ive narrowed down my tire search ...
Going wiht the Yokos but I am torn on the size. I see a lot of threads on 255 size but that is out of the question due to snow. Ive also seen comments to get a 245/40 but the yoko avid w4's only come in 245/45. (and of course stock)
I will be driving in plenty of snow and rain here in PA....
Any feedback appreciated. I dont want my speedometer, vsa or anything like that affected by a larger size. Will 245/45 actually do that ? Some "tire professionals" have mentioned it.

With the 245/45, the speedometer will read 1.41% slow, or in other words, if the speedometer now reads a perfect 60 and you're actually going 60, with the 245 you'll be going 60 and the speedometer will read 59.1MPH. You won't even notice the difference.
Calculate it yourself:

Can't help you with the snow problem, but most UHP tires don't react favorably in the ice/snow environment.
Stay away from the 245/40, too small diameter

There should be a minimal difference between the two sizes, but you'd get overall better handling with the OE size. I've read here that the Yoko's run wide, so the 235/45 should fit the bill perfectly.
That being said, the W4S is about one of the worst choices you can make if you're looking for decent snow traction. For rain and dry, it's great. For snow, not good. The w4s/v4s have wet-optimized tread patterns which are not very good for snow.

Not sure exactly which Michelin comes OE but generally speaking, the Michelin touring tires are heavily siped but have little void-to-tread ratio. Accordingly, the Michelin's are, generally speaking, worse in the snow but better on ice.

I would stay away from the Yoko W4S, not very good I made the mistake of buying them I have them on my 06 TL the road holding is not at good as the Advan S Drive or the Advan S4. though you can get the S drive from American Tire for $600 with the road hazard warranty.
Stay with the 235/45/17.

consider the general altimax hp 245/45? they handle very well, look good, get very good snow traction{ reviews say so--not on long enough to tell}, great warranty and are 1.5 inches wider than the oem junk. Im really pleased with them.. Also, price and treadwear cant be beat!
