Second, How fast do you really want to go?

Nokian has been the tire of choice for alot of Rallye cars on the winter events for alot of years.

I think that a performance oriented snow tire is a compromise between the best snow/ice traction and the best dry pavement traction as opposed to a tire like the RSI which is designed to provide the best traction on snow & ice covered roads.

I guess it all boils down on what is the target you want to reach?

For me, I want the best traction in the worst of winter conditions, hence my choice of a 205/60-16 as opposed to the dealer suggested 215/55-16.

Narrower tires will have less tendencies to float on slushy roads.

When these RSI I presently had for 1 winter are due for a change, I will get the Nokian HAKKA 4 Studded now that Ontario permits visitors to use them.

Guys, my dealer in London is refusing to put 215/55R16's on my TL. He says he tried this with someone last year and the car sits too low and scrapes on everything. I checked the 1010 website and the 215/55R16's have the lowest error, and are the closest to the original 235's on the car. Could it be because their on 16" rims? HAs anyone else encountered this? It makes no sense to me.

Wheels are stock 02-04 RSX Type S with Dunlop Wintersport M3 tires
205/55 16
5x114.3 bolt pattern 16x6.5 +45

thanks!
I am afraid that they will not clear the brake caliper. Even the 16" Steel Wheels that the Acura dealers sells for the TL with A/T will not clear.

I would suggest that you try them out for fit first before you buy them.

Also, the tire size you mention has a Overall Diameter of 24.9" while the regular 17" on the TL have 25.5" for the Brigestone EL42 and 25.6" for the Michelin HX MXM4.

Please keep in mind that the Overall Diameter of tires will vary between manufacturers for the same size of tires;

Eg:

Nokian RSI 215/55R16XL OD = 25.3"
Bridgestone Blizzak Revo1 215/55R16 25.4"

The TL OEM Tires
Bridgestone EL42 235/45-17 OD 25.5"
Michelin HX MXM4 234/45-17 OD 25.6"

There would be a difference in ground clearance of less then 0.15"

The 215/55-16 is the size that was suggested by my local Acura dealer last year for winter tires,

I selected 205/60-16XL Nokian RSI with an OD of 25.7" because of the narrower thread while still maintaining speedometer error with acceptable margins (Less then 3%)

The wheels will not reduce ride height as they have to respect the tire diameter if they are going to seal. The tire aspect ration (45/50/55/60) within the same tire size (16") .

Maybe the people experiencing scraping where trying to run through snow banks which is not reccomended with modern cars will all that plastic on the front end.

Best regards

I live just north of Toronto. Have a 3 month old TL 5AT, black with tan. I went to Newmarket Tire www.newmarkettire.com and they suggested and sold me on 16 inch steel wheels, with Toyo Garit KX P215/55/16 for 1176.00 installed. No TPMS though. The Acura dealer would not sell 17 inch rims, rather 2005 16 inch alloy with snows for over 2000.00 with no TPMS either. The dealer knew nothing of installable sensors that I could put on the winter wheels. Will have to live with the warning light I guess.

Looks like an undercover police car now.

Hey guys, can I put snow tires on my 04 stock 17's? And would they have to be a certain type? (ie like a winter sport?)

You will find that you are restricted to the type of tires you can use on such a wide rim while still clearing the fenders and minimizing speedometer errors (Indicating Under/Over the actual speed). You will need to find Winter Tires of the same size (235/45-17).

Do you drive a M/T TL or an A/T TL.

If it's A/T, I would suggest you invest in 4 16" steel rims from Acura and get 205/60-16XL winter tires.

The 205/60-16XL are narrower by about 1 inch compared to the 17". They will have less tendencies to float over slush and snow and provide better traction then a wider tire.

The steel rims are better if they use road salt in your area as the salt & sand will ruin the finish on those Alloys and after a few winters, the salt will have corroded the tire bead area on the wheel enough to cause constant air leaks.

Look at my signature below for the part number of those Acura Steel rims.

Best regards

The only thing is, is that I'm short on cash so I can't buy 4 new rims + tires.
