Question Will rims without a drop look bad?

Hello all,

I got an 06 Black TL and I am going to need new tires soon and have been holding out to get my rims until those things go...

Anyway I kind of want some light weight black 18's but will that look bad without a drop?

I have the A-Spec kit installed and FL roads suck so I cant drop..

What would be the key in getting it to look better than stock but without a drop? Just get a lower profile tire to keep the diameter the same?

I am not sure what RIM's I want but will look into getting some black ones with a chrome lip. I also need to retain my TPMS so if any suggestions on rims also let me know.

Oh, and what offsets would be best as I wont be doing a drop?

Thanks!

P.S. I tried searching around but didnt help much.

This is the same thing I've been thinking. In all honesty I think TLs with rims look good.....however, TLs with rims and are dropped look way better IMO.

I think 18s will look alright on a non-dropped TL, but you might want to look at 19s. I've been looking at getting a set of 19s, but I'm nervous about the crappy roads in MN. The plus to not having your TL dropped and putting rims on is that if you go with a bigger rim and tire, you don't have to worry about cutting anything.....as far as i know.

Well the one thing I want to avoid is also putting the MPH reading off to much and MPG also...

I know bigger means it will throw everything off, thus why I was thinking a lower profile tire to make up for it, but at the same time if you get to big of a rim and a low profile, you wont ride as good... Plus more risk of damage to your rim...

I had 19's on my 06 NBP, looked good I recieved plenty of compliments. My 19's actually stood at the same height as my 17's with rubber on them, since there was such a low amount of profile. Look through the bm

I've got the Acura 18" rims with the Yoko Z rated tires and no drop. I get tons of compliments and have always wanted to get it dropped to enhance the look even more, however, the ride with that combination sucks. I have so many rattles on the interior that it is a relief to go back to the stocks in the winter. Yes, Cincinnati roads suck too, but, I really don't know if I want to drop and make the ride worse than it already is. But damn, a dropped TL with rims looks sooo sweet.

here is my 05 non a-spec with 19's and no drop, imagine the a-spec will look a bit lower due to the lipkit....

if you have the a-spec suspension, that will be good enough for the florida roads. I'd say with goin gthe rout of lighweight 18's with a lessened diameter to keep speedo accurate.

I have a-spec body kit with a-spec suspension which dropped car about 1". 18 inch wheels look pretty good IMO. If the roads do really suck in FL, I would not go lower profile than 45 due to potential of bending rims. aspec rims are known for being soft and prone to damage.

Personally I would go with 19inch wheels. TL with 18s look kinda small with the size of our vehicle. Since you will be spending the $$, you mine as well do it right the first time and not have any regrets down the road. Plus, I think lowering is a must with nicer bigger wheels. They compliment each other and it will make a big difference in performance and the looks of your vehicle. Just check out the big difference after Blackura_NY's TL's before and after lowering. Looks hot and the stance is very aggressive now compare to when it wasn't lowered before.

Where in Orlando are you that the roads are so bad?

Nothing is worse than NY/NJ roads from my experience.

I went with 20's with 35 series tires. They fill up the wheel wells perfectly with no drop, no rubbing, and the ride didn't change much IMO. I just swapped the standard valve stems with my TPMS ones and it works perfectly. No calibration needed.

Florida roads do suck! I went with the A-spec suspension. It looked funny with the wheels without a drop. Go A-spec if you want to be conservative!

strange... i would have thought florida roads were awesome and nice and flat and smooth. I know your driveways are pretty easy to get a lowered car into...

NY/NJ/CT ROADS SUCK!!!!!

My TL gets raped on every speedbump i go over, Either its the bottom pice of plastic or its the front bumper when comgin out of a driveway. In daytona, the roads are concrete, not asphalt, so tires get eaten up quicker and there is alot of road noise. BTW, i have a stock TL, not suspension upgrades except for the RSB.

I think 18's without drop leaves quite a bit of wheel gap. But aspec is a very subtle drop IMO. that might be a way to go... but if you're really worried about the roads then why get wheels at all?

Wow I cannot believe you think they are that bad. I go to Daytona Beach all the time. Since I was 16 every car I have ever owned, except my Infiniti FX35, has had custom wheels with a low profile tire and lowering springs or coilovers. I have travel all over the state and never had one bent wheel and only one curb rash because of my stupidity. Some of my cars have been featured in magazines.

Yes my front bumpers have scraped, especially the Audi A4 because of the body kit, but nothing to complain about Florida roads sucking. Be thankful for the roads we have here at least we do not have to deal with salt damage from clearing roads because of snowstorms or have to place on "winter wheels". I will take Florida roads any day over most states.

BLACKURA_NY you are absolutely correct from my travels across the US, NJ/NY roads are the worst.

Yea i know. i WISH i lived in florida. I wouldnt have to take my rims off for the winter, or worry about the insanely HUGE amount of pot holes

However, he did have one point. Concrete roads will probably give you ALOT of road noise. When i am on a highway, it switchs from asphalt to concrete for a new interchange or whatever the difference in decibals is EXTREMELY noticeable.

I guess he should come drive up to NY one day and see how bad it is. ESPECIALLY in NYC / 5 boroughs. I am dropped 1.7" with a-spec kit and its really not that bad, except i cant back out of my driveway without scraping that bottom plastic. never once had a problem with my mufflers (and ive got comptech so the Y pipe sits very low (lowest part of the car)

I would lower my car, but I honestly see no point because I live in Colorado, and the roads are crappy here, but I might lower cause It'll look nicer, I have the Tein's springs, would it be recommened that I get some new shocks as well?

shocks help. depends on your cars mileage. if you've got an 06 with 9k on it, dont bother. if its an on 04 w/ 60k on it, then you should be changing them anyways.

lowering the car not only looks great, but changes the handling drastically. the car will take turns like no tomorrow. also, spend the $110 and get the comptech RSB (Rear Sway Bar) MAN DOES IT HELP !!!

The RRP TL is lowered with 20's.....20x10 in the rear with 255/30/20 & the front is 20x8.5 with 245/30/20 with a 35mm offset, minor alteration to prevent rubbing but I like the look.

TL is lowered close to 2 inches.......side profile with it lowered.

Rear shot of it lowed with the 20x10's.......TL is driven all the time in the NYC with no problems with potholes, I've hit a few potholesand recovered with no damage but also you have to be very cautious when you drive in NYC.

My wheel alignment shop suggested......to protect the rim use 45psi with my 17's and 42psi with my 20's.

how is the handling with wider rims in the back? I have seen it on rwd setups looks good but does it affect the handling on fwd setups.

everybody thinks there roads are the worse then somebody elses... honestly... roads probably suck EVERYWHERE!!! except for like texas, or arizona, or some wide open area w/o snow.

I have traveled many states, and i know for a fact NY sucks (i live here) and jersey's not that much better.....but florida roads are AWESOME for lower cars
