If you're looking for performance, compound matters more than width. If I only had the choice between the NT05 in a 235 and my old BFG G-force Sports in a 255, I would do the NT05 in a heartbeat. If you can get the sticky compound in a wider tire, that's even better.

On the stock rim 245/45 and 255/40 are the typical wider sizes.
Also keep in mind that not all widths are created equal. A Bridgestone 245 will be narrower than a Michelin 245. Look at tread width as well as section width.
255/40 is slightly undersize on the radius, so if you're not lowered, that'll show up a bit more. 245/45 is a bit oversize on the diameter.
