wheels vs "rims"

I've noticed many people on this and other forums have been calling wheels rims. This is a misnomer and it needs to be corrected.

A "rim" is a component of a wheel. Calling a wheel a rim makes you sound like an <insert insulting adjective noun combo here>.

That is all.

Discuss?

Years ago cars had spare rims in case they had issues or a flat .. it consisted of the outer rim and a tire and to change it it was unbolted from the wooden spokes.

Good luck with getting the proper terminology. People still refer to the TL as having struts when it has 4 shocks. No struts on this car.

It doesn't bother me how people say it but I knew the difference. IHC is right, most people don't care about proper terminology.

if the rim is part of the wheel, care to explain what part?

i looked this same thing up the other day and someone said that the wheel = rim + tire...so based on your statement this would be incorrect. true/false?

3. the outer circle of a wheel, attached to the hub by spokes.
4. a circular strip of metal forming the connection between an automobile wheel and tire, either permanently attached to or removable from the wheel.

dictionary definitions when searched "Rim" but this is a forum and everyone knows what you are talking about when you use that word.

It's really not important. There's so much misinformation here that this is really nitpicking.

There's the epic and super long "valve chatter" thread when there is no such thing as valve chatter.

Everyone calls them struts when the TL uses only shocks.

Downpipes, only turbo cars have downpipes.

There's 0 knowledge of tuning except for a couple members.

The tires, wheels, and suspension section is filled with "what rims should I get" or "what springs for what drop" that has been answered a million times with all emphasis on looks over performance.

The complete lack of understanding of how larger brakes work and why big brakes won't always stop you quicker. People even get big brakes just for the looks.

No emphasis on performance tires even though it's the larges single improvement you can make.

The total and udder lack of understanding of swaybars and handling balance.

The exact same question asked at least once a day in the audio section. I wish the mods would automatically ban people who ask "how do I add a sub to the TL" or "what size speakers".

I could go on and on and on.

Its slang, who cares.

Rims, wheels, alloys, steelies, shoes, mags.

Some are more specific than others but the meanings are generally understood.

You're certainly on a roll! I completely forgot about the rim/wheel controversy.
