There was quite a lengthy thread a while back about 255/40-17 tires, however, my opinion is that the 255 requires a 8.5" minimum rim width, and also they are only 24.8" in diameter which makes them @ 1" smaller than the preferred 245/45-17 replacements. With the 43 offset, the wheel/tire would move out only 2 mm, or .08".

Here's the thread:

I know a lot of people like 19's and some go 20, but for me personally, if I change wheels, I'd go 18.

So, why upgrade the wheels and stay at the stock 17? Just curious.

I would assume most would do it for ride quality and looks. I replaced the stock TL wheels with chromed 17" TL wheels and 245/45-17 S.4's. Great handling, and a great ride, no downside. Also, I'm one that doesn't like the larger wheel with a small looking tire which is the case with 40 and 35 series. If you see some of the 20 plus tires, the tires are the size of rubber bands.
245/45-17 (25.7" Tall) tire height above rim 4.35"
245/40-18-(25.7" Tall) 3.65"
235/35-19-(25.5" Tall) 2.78"
ETC.
Just my taste.

Think about 17x9 offset 45 and 265/40x17.

The '03 rims are only 6.5" wide, and a 245/45 as well as a 235/45 require a 7.5" minimum rim size. Can they be mounted certainly, but I wouldn't recommend it, as the rims are 1" too narrow. You had better check over on the 2G Forum as a great amount of info is available pertaining to tire and wheel applications. Most suggest a 225/50-17, 6" plus wheel, and a 7" rim is specified with 225/45-17 tires.

there is a guy who has 255/40/17 tires on his stock wheels and it's a regular 3g tl and he has no problems with it, i don't think you will run into any problems if you put 245/45/17 on the oem wheels, that is what i am going to run on my 17's also.
