What do you think of this deal? refurb. stock wheels $175/wheel
Hi all,
I'm getting 4 17" TL refurbished (i.e., straightened and repainted) stock wheels for $175/wheel from the local Acura dealer. I'm going to mount 4 snow tires (Dunlop Wintersport M3). They said these are $275 new each -- sounds reasonable but I was taught to not really trust dealers.
I'm thinking if I lose a wheel (e.g. due to pothole, etc.), I'd have a spair ready to mount.
I was hoping to get some wheels at tirerack.com but I think the entire U.S. went for it sooner (their ~$100 17" wheels are sold out).
Thanks,
Dennis

look around also, you can probably to just as good or better than that for non damaged wheels. it usually costs about $125 a wheel to fix them. make sure they come with some type of warranty if you get them.

Dennis..
I see we convinced you over at AW to get 4 snows over just 2. Good choice.
As for the all the cheaper rims being gone at TR your right. I'm one of the bastards that snapped up the ~$100. I started looking for OE rims on eBay over the summer and the lowest price on 4 rims I saw I predicted to be around $600-$700 to my door. Then I would have had to get tires in and had them mounted locally. TR's packages were my best choice even though I wanted more OE rims for the winter. Now that winter is here you will need to act quicker and might not be able to wait for a good deal.
I'd say that $175 sounds a bit high for a refurb but given your options it may be your best bet. You are also right about having extra "replacement" rims.
Do the math... The wheels will be $700. Changeovers cost about $40 to $50 each season (spring/fall). Use 45 X 2 X [years you plan to keep the car]. Break-even for you is at 7 to 8 years. If you are planning to keep the car only 4 you may want to just deal with the hassle of changeover vs. separate rims. Consider other things like wear and tear on the beads and rims as well. My break-even was at 5 years and I plan to keep the car at least 8 years.

I'm going to skip the refurbished wheels and just mount the snow tires on my OEM rims and wait until next year when I can get a cheaper wheel set.
Thanks,
Dennis

Deal just got a little better

This is diminishing the advantage of waiting for the $100/wheel deal next season plus having to get the snows installed on the new rims.
I've got a 7yr 84K warranty and expect to keep the car at least 5 years.
Did you get your OEM 17" wheel for $225 new from an Acura dealer?

Dennis, I am not sure if you are interested but I am putting on RonJons/Proxes 4 so I will be selling my stock setup. I just took delivery of the car yesterday and by the time I get my wheels put on (next Weds) they will have about 150 miles on them. I know you aren't interested in the stock tires but let me know what you think.

I'm getting $20 discount for install if I buy the wheels from the dealer and with my coupon, the wheels I'm buying are $630. So, you'd have to beat (or match) $610 and have the wheels at the dealership (Sunnyside Acura, Nashua, NH) when my tires arrive for install (which is after I receive them at my house and after I make an appt. to get them installed). The wheels would have to not have the tires on them unless you want them removed (at your expense).
You can PM me and we can go from there.
Thanks,
Dennis

Sounds like you are getting a great deal! I should have checked with SunnySide about having them install my A-Spec bodykit & suspension. Oh well, I think I might just keep them for the winter. We just got snow here today!
