Weight of 2005 TL OEM rim ? Does anybody know ?

I've called a couple of Acura dealerships and even Acura corporation and believe it or not they don't have a clue as to how much the OEM rim weighs. The dealer told me that if I brought in a scale he would be happy to weigh a rim that he has in stock !!

If anyone knows for certain how much these rims weigh, please let me know and spare me a trip to my dealer with scale in tow !! lol

Thanks all !

I once weighed my wheel and tire combo and got 48 lbs. The tire should weigh about 23 lbs, assuming that Tirerack correctly lists Michelin HX MXM4's weight of 25 lbs.

I'm asuming you meant to say the wheel should weigh about 23 lbs since you said the tire was listed as weighing 25 lbs

lol 260....thanks. It's hard to believe they don't list the weight of the wheel with the specifications. I mean hell, even when you buy a TV stand or something the weight is listed along with the dimensions !

I have the four brand new 06' rims in boxes that I just took off my TL....assuming they are exactly the same I will pull one out and weigh one. I will tell you that 23 lbs will probably either be right on or within a pound though. I will report back ASAP

For my '06, I weighted the OEM wheel (oem rim with oem tire mounted). The OEM wheel is 51.0 lbs (bathroom scale = +/- 0.5 lb.). The oem tire is 23.0 lbs. So, that makes the oem rim wieght 28.0 lbs according to my bathroom scale.

Yeah....but isn't the OEM tire 23 lbs when it's not filled with air ?

Ive got a very accurate, very repeatable scale that has half a pound increments. The rim weighs exactly 24 pounds and my tire/rim package was exactly 47 lbs before I dismounted the rubber (which backs up the claimed 23 lbs for the rubber). Also, I weighed the rims by themselves as well as holding one while weighing myself, then stepping back on without the rim....both methods yeilded 24.0 lbs.

Much more than that starts to get ridiculous considering its an aluminum rim thats only 17 X 8 inches.

Hell, my 18 X 10.5 rim on my C5 weighs only 21 pounds which is awesome considering its size. It is a very lightwheel from the factory.

Just an FYI....

Tony

Tony, thanks for the accurate weights. Mine might be Inaccurate (pun) :gheylaugh: I used just a bathroom scale.

I am really surprised that no one has addressed this issue of tire pressure addidng to the weight .

TIRE PRESSURE (the compresssed air) DOES NOT ADD ANY WIEGHT !!!!!!

The mass of the air inside of the tire would need to be measured with a scientific scale to be detected. I don't know the weight of the air in the tire exactly, but we are talking about a very small fraction of one ounce at the most.

Think of the compressed air like a rubberband. You stretch a rubberband, and the rubberband is applying maybe three pounds of force against your finger. This is like the 32 psi force inside your tire. althought the rubberband is applying three pounds of force, the rubberband still only wieghts a small fraction of one ounce.

Regarding the tire pressure, it's correct. I weighed my wheel/tire combo with correct tire pressure and afterwards, deflating it completely. My digital scale cannot see the difference in weight.

My '05 OEM rim weighed in at 27lbs. Used my wife's bathroom scale so results are probably less than actual.

I feel that Tony'sTL rim weight is very accurate. But now there is a post from Jeffa that says the '05 rim weighed out at 27 lbs.

So in this corner, weighing in at a lean 24 lbs and wearing anthracite metallic trunks, we have Mr TL06....

And in this corner, weighin in at a solid 27 lbs and wearing white diamond pearl trunks, we have Mr TL05......

15 miles of driving for the heavyweight championship of the worldddddddd......let's get ready tooooooooo rummmmmmmmbleeeeeeeeeee.....

Ok, ok....back to the point.....is it possible that the '06 rim was designed to be ligher than the '05 rim ?

24 lbs....

"Floats like a butterfly....stings like a bee"....LOL

I'm quite sure its possible Acura found a way to trim some fat off the rims (assuming an 05' rim does in fact weigh 27 lbs.). Unsprung weight reduction is big for the OEM's and they know it....increased fuel economy, better ride quality, and it allows for a few more of those ponies to make it to the ground (not be wasted trying to accelerate heavy rims and tires).

Im thinking a third round knock-out with a surprise left uppercut the "heavy" rim didnt see coming (or couldn't react quickly nough!)....LOL

LOL Tony.....I'm thinking maybe the rims for '06 are lighter because the HP for an '06 is 258 as opposed to 270 for '05.

Do you know why they dropped the HP to 258 in '06 by the way ?

No drop in power....just an optical illusion.

The motors make the identical power output....Big Brother decided that the manufacturers needed to rate the engines SAE power, not STD power which is higher because its rated at a lower air temp and higher barometric pressure (both situations condusive to the same engine producing more power). Essentially a 258 HP engine (SAE) makes 270 HP if rated at STD.

The only thing that really changed was simply the way they rated the power output....the engine and its performance is identical.

The bigger difference that needs to be taken into account if weighing both wheel and tire and doing subtraction is that a full tread depth tire compared to a worn to the wear bar tire has about a 2-3 lbs difference.
