vibrating wheels... hub rings?

Over the past few months, ive grown sick of balancing my wheels over and over again. and they still vibrate at >65mph

i HAVE hubcentric rings (came with my ASA wheels from tirerack.com

are they maybe not doing a good job? should i invest in these ?

http://www.justforwheels.com/index.j...cat=hubcentric

does anybody have them or any feedback ? is it worth $50 for aluminum rings?

You say you have been balancing them over and over as if they are balanced one minute then a few days later they are not....? If so, is it really the rims/lack of centering etc.? I know nothing of your rims or if they use the center ring of the hub to center or the lugnuts etc.. If currently they aren't using a centering device that precisely matches/slips over the hub centering ring,,, then by all means get a device that will center them. Don't rely on the lugs only...

Try investing in the new hubcentic rings, if that doesnt do it there are many other things that will cause vibation! I spent thousands of dollars trying to pinpoint vibration on my accord and took off alot of aftermarket parts and turns out the stock rotors were warped sooo badly it was causing the vibration at 60mph and up, thats one reason why i got rid of it and bought my TL.

well, i have pinpointed the problem to the aftermarket wheels. Tire wear is normal (slightly uneven due to camber in rear). however, using my stock wheels the vibration is not there. also, before i lowered the vehicle, vibration was still a problem with the aftermarket wheels only.

I dismounted the tires and inspected every inch of my wheels, no bends, no cracks. i had balanced them several times, and it only "helped" the situation, never eliminated it. i have had my eyes out for the top notch hunter machine (which i cant find anywhere). When i did find it, the place had the balls to tell me $65 a wheel. too much for me if its not going to guarantee (as they said they can give no guarantee it will eliminate vibration).

I have put alot of thought into these new rings, as i did notice one of my front rings are cracked and they are cheap plastic. maybe the $50 is worth it. I will let you all know of my success when the new rings arrive.

Thanks for all your feedback

thats an awesome write up. took me over 20 minutes to read it !! lol

i think i'm going to try the aluminum rings first (only $50). if that doesnt do it, i might suck it up and pay >$200 to use that new hunter machine.

The vibration simply annoys me. a new luxury car shouldnt be doing it, and i must admit, yes i did screw around with aftermarket suspensions, wheels ,etc. etc. and i brought it on myself. The rims where the first mod i did, and the vibration began there.

Actually the plastic ring is prefered .. the metal ones corrode and rust to the hub.

ohhhh good point. now the plastic ones i am using came from tirerack.com. Are these ones any better? or same damn thing.

Also, i noticed one ring is cracked completely. (you can stretch the ring and seperate it_ it still fills in the hole, but it is broken. maybe thats my problem?

$65 is out to lunch ... do you have a Discount tire nearby.. they did mine for $25 per wheel and that was including moving the tire on the rim etc.. and it solved my problem. The only times they might not be sucessful is if the tire is out of round, flatspotted or separating.

You can save a bit of money by isolating it to which wheel by getting the wobble to the front then swapping out one aftermarket wheel with the spare and see if it solves it .. if no then put the wheel back and try the spare on the front on the other side.

If the wobble is in the seat then its a rear wheel .. same process of elimination.

Lot of pissing around but your time is cheap. This method saved me a few $$ .

Remember do one wheel at a time. The cracked rings could be your problem.

ohhhh you wrote that? kudos to you.

yea i should try to eliminate which wheel it is. the vibrating is in the steering wheel, not the seat, so i can only assume its a front wheel. i mean, when im coasting @ like 70mph ,.my wrist watch is going wild while im holding the steering wheel... i

it amazes me that some tire shops are ripping people off to do the job right. I have a hunter 9700 and we only charge $6.00 each wheel. I would also suggest finding metal rings and then having the balance done with the 9700.

I get a slight vibration also. I'm looking at the ones on ebay. I've found a few that say for acura tl's. It also talks about measuring. Since I have after market wheels, would that mean these wont fit?

it sounds like the ring might have cracked due to the vibration in the wheel. i know a lot of ppl that have high end ~3K a set aftermarket wheels use the plastic ones.

Rusting is oxidization .. Aluminum oxidizes but with no iron its not brown but a white residue.

Aluminum corrodes but it does not rust. Rust only refers only to iron and steel corrosion.

Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Aluminum oxide corrosion also looks a lot more like aluminum so it isn't as easy to notice as rusted iron.

When iron corrodes the color changes and it actually expands. This expanding and color change can produce large red flakes that we all know as rust. Unlike aluminum oxide, the expanding and flaking off of rust exposes new metal to further rusting. This why it is so important to provide a barrier so rust doesn't start.

Just means you will need to know the I.D. of the center hole in the wheel to get the right ones.
