TPMS for older "no notch" rims ?
Hello,
It's winter tire season, I'm in southern New England and thinking the ContiExtremeSummerContactSport set isn't going to be much good if the snow sticks around.
I just got a set of Dunlop Graspic DS-3 snow tires mounted on older 17" Acura rims, HOWEVER there is no TPMS installed on this set.
In various threads I've read that OEM TPMS sensors can be installed on older "no notch" rims but it requires a larger than normal amount of wheel weights. Is this correct?
Are there any lighter or better (reasonably priced) TPMS modules out there for my winter tires? Or is OEM off Ebay the way to go?
I assume the tires have to be taken off for the tpms sensors to be installed and then the tires remounted and balanced (I'm hoping this will be less than $150 for all four at my local shop)
Thanks in advance.

Have you considered just not running TPMS for the winter?

You have car that came with TPMS from the factory and want to get another set of rims that come without the TPMS sensors, correct?
You can get OEM sensors. They should fit just fine and pair with the car automatically. In the shop we use Autel sensors (as they are universal and can be paired to any car) but they require programming. No idea about OEM, but autel go for ~$25 a piece. Of course tire will need to be removed and rebalanced/
I wouldn't go with cheap ebay route, as they might be old stock (weak batteries) or just low quality.

Yeah, I thought about it, but this is a 2006 (6MT) so I would get that error message every startup. Pretty sure it would make me annoyed, and would rather part with some cash than be annoyed, even just for 3~4 months (every year).

I have purchased a 2006 Acura TL with notch rims, tpms and 235/45R17 summer tires. (not yet on the road, still waiting for license plates from the State).
I have purchased 4 winter tires (also 235/45R17) mounted on older non-notch Acura rims (2004?) without tpms.
I would like to add tpms to the set of winter wheels.
I want to verify that tpms can be added to non-notch rims.
I would also like input or suggestions on which tpms units to purchase (OEM or specific aftermarket).

You can use generic tire sensors on the 2004/5 wheel and the tire shop will be able to mount it properly without the use of excessive weights.
