TL vs. Snow

Hello acurazine members.theres a possibility that ill be in the market.not very great chance but i like to be prepared regardless.Im debating between a fully loaded 2008 tl or a 20008 infiniti g25 with AWD.My question is how is the TL in the snow? I want the tl badly but I don't want to be stuck in the new york snow.Ive seen some tl's drive in the snow before but i wonder how good it actually is since they are only FWD.opinions anyone?

Get a good set of snow tires and it'll be fine. I've only gotten the car stuck bad once and that was when 2 feet of snow fell and I decided to take the TL out instead of my ATV, which also ended up getting stuck..

Kinda hard to tell. 20008 G25 seems to be from the future.

The TL is very good in the snow and thats my experience with OEM tires. Would obviously be even better with a set of winter tires.

Slap on a set of winter tires on almost any car and you will be perfectly fine. You have nothing to be worried about

JTS97Z28 and I have a difference of opinion on the matter...I found stock tires to be terrible this past winter and will ne outfitting my TL with snow tires this year. It was also a great excuse to buy a nice set of summer rims/tires

The tires make the difference. I had Toyo Versados and they were mediocre at best in the snow. Got Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds for this past winter and they were freaking fantastic. You had to TRY to break the car loose in the snow. I was more concerned about other drivers in the snow than myself. Get snow tires and you'll love every penny of the cost after the first snow falls. And then you can spoil yourself with summer tires when the weather is nice.

I live close to Syracuse and get by just fine with 245/45/17 Bridgestone Potenza RE 960 AS, although I think I'm a pretty confident, competent driver. Some people prefer snow tires.

Best solution: fit some snow tires on your stock rims, then buy yourself some nice aftermarket wheels for summer time. win/win!

If you can, just work from home when the snow drops . I'm sure in NYC, the snow gets cleared up pretty quickly.

Snow tires do not sound like a bad idea, hopefully the near new Hankook V4ES the car came with do not get me stuck this winter.

Good to know these cars do good in bad weather.

I'm with you ... I drove the TL in 2 snow falls with stock tires .. one of the worst cars in the snow I have had in a long time ... added winters .... very good in the snow .

That's what I do

Stockies with Blizzak LM-60s (these cost me $1300!) for the winter and A-Spec rims for the summer

When I bought my car the stockies were already wrapped with Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2s that were pretty much bald for the winter so I never got to try a TL out in the winter with stock tires.

Here in Chicago I had some people tell me the TL was "bad in the snow". I don't know that I buy that, but I think that people put on UHP all seasons and wonder why the tires don't stick well in the snow. We're talking about a front heavy fwd car. It'll do fine with the right tires. That doesn't mean you need dedicated snow. Yes, they are a good idea, but if you purchase all seasons with snow use in mind instead of maximum corning ability, you'll do fine. The stock tires weren't very good for snow. The goodyear f1's I had next were pretty bad. The continental DWS I have now actually do pretty well in snow.

What ever car you choose, just remember that all cars brake with all 4 wheels, and turn too. Buy tires with that in mind.

Aim, welcome to Acurazine.

I purchased a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS (Dry, Wet, Snow) tires and haven't had a problem since. They're GREAT year-round tires.

Also, in the lower right hand corner of each posting, the middle icon is a multi-quote button. This allows you to reply to multiple people in one posting.

Cheers!

If you put decent snow tires on a ferrari it'll be able to drive better in the snow than and AWD car/suv with mediocre or the wrong tires.

The Continental DWS is a great All Season Performer that grip exceptionally well in the snow and as well in wet and dry weather. I have them on my TL and they are amazing comfort wise as well.

If you put those on a G25 or even on a TL-S you'll be fine either way. The downside to AWD is that you'll loose a few MPG and then again the G25 isn't going to be as fast as a TL.

ive posted this before, but snow handling is a function of:
weight, torque/power, rim size, tire material/tread, traction control systems, front/rear drive.

Heavy high powered/torque cars that are rwd with large rims and summer tires are the worst possible combination and the exact opposite are the best.

Given all that, the TL gets dinged a bit on heaviness and high power/torque, but the rest are all positives.

I have DWS's now mostly because before them I had the continental extremecontact all seasons which were pretty damn good in the snow. I expect/have heard good things from the DWS and expect them to perform even better. As far as I'm concerned, short of pure snow environments, the convenience of not having to change tires and always being prepared for snow/wet/dry conditions is worth it.

caught another typo in my OP.its a g35. 306hp v6although it is more powerful then the TL there is something about the TL that just doesn't want to make you turn around once you start looking at it

That is certainly true! The TL is an amazing car, and so is the G35. The TL does have it's quirks, but so does the G35. I can say that Honda/Acura has made me a life long customer not only for the amazing product that they have made, but their commitment to stand by what they make. I had an 06 MDX and a few problems with it. Acura did the right thing and got me into a fully loaded 2007 MDX without giving me any trouble. Adding onto that, when I ran into issues with my TL they fixed them without any sort of hesitation. In fact they took care of my family so well, that when it was time to get a car to take around the city I went straight to the honda dealership and got an accord. I didn't even weight the facts of the competitors because I knew honda would take care of me 10 years down the line if something happened to the car. Adding onto that, today I would have had an Acura RL in my signature rather than a BMW 760 had I not waited one extra month to go to the dealer and order a car. Personally if I had a chance to rewind and change my decision, I wouldn't. I'd stick with the TL not only for what an amazing car it is nor for the service acura has given me, but for the friends that I have made here and the wonderful community that is here to support owners. Anytime I have needed any sort of help, all the gurus and ricers have come to help out with whatever they could have offered.

Don't factor the car by itself into your decision, factor in the way everything else that will revolve around the car
