Tires revisited..

Wife and I exchange X-mas gifts, she wants a flat screen TV for the kitchen and I want tires.
Just hit 13K miles on my TL and will rotate the OEM ones but want to increase the width to 255/45-17 on stock rims ( read it as an option size in Discount Tire Direct ) but when I called they did not recommend it worse case scenario I'll have to get the 245's .
I need feedback as to which ALL SEASON Directional you would recommend, Nitto's my favorite doesn't make them All Season, the from reading Falkens Ziex's are noisy / crap.
Question #1: has anyone tried the 255 on the stock rims and did it rub?
Question # 2: Which tire have you used on the stock rim and where did U buy it.

Thanks Hector AKA HEK

lot of guys went with 245 size for Toyo Proxy. I have not purchased yet - probably by next weekend tho. I was all in a twist about going from 235 to 245 - I have nothing to add about a 255.

i thought about those toyo proxy 4 too until the Car& Driver's comparo http://www.caranddriver.com/article....ticle_id=10252 in which toyo didn't do very good. of course those were summer tires but.....same company u know...i had so many directional tires before and none of them were very quiet. i think it's a trade-off.

IMHO:
  • Avon Tech M550 A/S (very cheap. i heard flatspot. never used them before. tirerack rated #1 tho. #2 is Nero M+S but u want directional)
  • Continental ContiExtremeContact (good tires given the price. wall is not as firm as Michelin but good grip nonetheless)
  • Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (gets noisy as it gets old quickly. great tire if u can afford)
  • Yokohama AVS dB S2 (eh......nothing too special to me. mid price, grip, tread life, noise...mid everything to me. kinda blah...)
  • Bridgestone Potenza RE950 (some people say it's good on dry, sucks on snow. tell u the truth. Bridgestone scares me mentally speaking. e....l....4....2)
  • Toyo Proxy 4 (kinda wondering about that myself...a lot of people here say they are good but my Q is "are they just comparing with their old EL-42 or they actually had a lot of tire experiencs under their belt?")
i'd stay away from unnecessary weight (bigger = heavier) and width as they weill decrease ur car's accel. performance. unless ur going with supercharge or things like....if that's the case, no tires can help you on a FWD with too many HP anyway...;-) good luck.

I came up with the same list as you guys thanks, now I'm debating if I shoould just print out these pages and take it to the local Town Fair Tire and see if they would match the prices. PersonallY I have bought tires from Discount Tire Direct online and Tirerack and had them mounted by TownFair Tire which they were not happy because they don't make that much money on these deals.
And those MIchelin Pilots damn $188...

Bridgestone free replaced my EL42s with RE 750s and I even got the 245/45/17 installed. I like it a whole lot better in handling and looks.

care to elaborate on free replacement and how did you manage to go a size wider since that would not constitute a true "repalcement".. = for = I think

These will be my next tires

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

I and many in the Audi community have had great luck with them in the past.
