Tires bald at 32,000 miles

My Potenza's are completely bald after only 32000 miles on my '04 TL. Is this normal wear? Of course I return it in 4 months and was thinking of driving bald until then. However wet performance stinks and I figured I'd die in the snow. So I slapped on some Kumho's and now I'm bummed at giving Acura back good tread. Damn tires didn't even last the 39 month lease!

When I first got my TL, I notice the tires on another one when I was at Taco Bell. I asked the guy how long he had his. 18 months with 28,000 miles, his tire needed to be replaced.

My tires are so bald they needed to be replaced 5000 miles ago. The tire guy was shocked at how little tread there was. I decided to replace them ($536 bucks!) with cheap Kumho's just to get me through the end of the lease. OEM would have run me more than a grand installed. I have the $1500 damage waiver so I could have returned them bald without penalty, but alas I will now be giving them back the car with good tires.

Bridgestone "performance tires" (anything in the Potenza line) suck. The absolute best I've ever done is 42k, with some wear left. That was on a Maxima (02) that I pretty much drove *only* on the highway. My wife's car (same car, same setup, bought same day) went through the same tires at about 30k, with all around town. Hers were actually bald at that point.

What makes it even better is that you use Bridgestone's TreadWear rating to determine how long their tires should last you. Yet, Bridgestone won't do A THING to help you out when you wear the rubber off of them very prematurely. They just don't care.

In my opinion, they "overrate" the treadwear on their tires. They should just be more realistic about it. No one is getting the wear that is being advertised.

My Bridgestone OEM EL42's are bald at just under 20K miles. My TL 6MT was never raced or autocoursed. Tire wear was mostly equal across the tread and tire pressure was kept at 35F/32R.

I thought I may have gotten 30K out of them. Called the local Acura dealer and asked about the warranty, they said it's prorated so it would cost $104/tire for replacement (for replacement EL-42's, I tried to see if I could get the Michelin's to no avail).

So it's now time for me to call Tirerack to order a set of Avon A/S M550's.

Well with replacing the tires. You will be able to give it back. Who knows what could have happened to you.

32,000 miles is a lot!

The EL-42s are infamous for wearing quickly (less than 20k) amongst other problems, so OP was fortunate to get any more.
For wear, I would expect anything with a "performance tire" tag and V-speed rating or higher (like W-speed rating, with our TLs) to last no longer than 25-30K miles because of the stickier compounds and stiffer sidewalls. Otherwise, tires can be made to wear less- they just won't stick as well.

The Bridgestone RE*50 Potenza's were/are pretty good tires on several of my cars and I have not had the problems that people with Turanzas experienced. I did prefer the Yoko AVS Intermediates, but they no longer make those...

How long do you expect a W rated tire to last ?
32K seems like a good amount for the EL42s.

Premature Potenza Wear on '04-'05 TLs

Check other threads on this, too. I went to my Acura dealer today, and found out about a TSB (05-050 - link below) on premature rear tire wear.

http://www.in.honda.com/Rjanisis/pubs/SB/B05-050.PDF

My issue appears to be the FRONT, rather than the rear tires (although I did rotate), but we'll see what the dealer will do for me.
