Tires

My OEM tires are shot and I am in need of new. Can anyone recommend a comparable but less expensive set than the OEM Michelins? The car is leased and probably going back on this set so don't want to spend $250 a tire.

Jeeper, there are too many to list!! I was gonna say "Just search" but what do you search on? If you're giving the car back -- how long from now? -- and won't go a ton more miles, then you mainly need good tires for little dollars. I assume on Long Island you want all-seasons.

Some suggestions in that vein:
Tire: Tire Rack Price:
Kumho Ecsta ASX $88
Avon Tech M550 AS $108
Continental Extreme Contact $108
Toyo Proxes 4 $105 (EdgeRacing.com)
Falken Ziex512 $72 (EdgeRacing.com) these get noisy quick and don't last very long

Or you could go H-rated, which might lose you some top-end handling but buy some comfort:
Yokohama Avid H4S $101

You can search this forum on any of those names and get lots of hits. These are all good tires at low prices. There are literally dozens of other choices if you want to go to $150. Retail will be more than TireRack or other on-line outlets, but you can haggle and lots will price-match, and save you the shipping. I got my Kumhos at Sears (!!) for less than tire rack per tire when all said and done. I watched them like a hawk and they did a good job.

Happy hunting!

WAs just looking on tire rack and the Micheling HX MXV4 OEM tires are not rated that well. Is that true? I thought they were amazing.

Very soft, wear quickly, horrible snow traction, mediocre rain traction, and too squishy in the dry.

Pirelli PZero Nero M+S $144 each
Continental Conti ExtremeContact $108 each
Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position $157 each

I put the pirelli's on my old TL righ before I sold it, and in wet they were amazing! I never got to try them in snow, but do some searches here on azine and you will definitely find plenty of people runnign them!

well, there you go then.....

I just ended up getting Blizzaks for my OEM wheels since I have 19's for summer. Love the Blizzaks. Will have them on every car I own from now on.

i would put my money on the toyo proxes4 or the conti extreme contacts re050. proxes on edgeracing.com are really cheap, never tried em out in the snow, but have heard great things, it grips better in heavy rain than in dry weather

When are you giving the car back? Most lease deals have tires listed as "normal wear and tear"...... at least mine did - turned it in last fall with balding tires - no problem

Stay away from the Conti ExtremeContacts. Worst tire I ever owned. Hard to balance, and keep balanced, noisy, rough, I could not wait for them to wear out. In retrospect, I should have dumped them early.

Pirelli PZeroNero M+S if you need all seasons. They are OK in light snow.

Car not going back for awhile. Think going with the toyo proxes 4. Ran into another TL owner who had then on and said they were great. Look good too.

I've had them for nearly 40K miles and have been pretty happy with them. Unfortunatley, my alignment was a little off and one has worn on the outside edge. The other 3 tires have more than 1/4 of tread left. Now I have to replace at least 2.

Found a local shop that sells them for $119 (245/45/17). When you include shipping, it's cheaper than edgeracing.com.

245/45-17? I thought stock was 235/45-17.

You are correct. I just upsized slightly to get a slightly wider tire with a hint of rim protection. It's really not much difference, though.

I had the Toyo Proxes 4 installed last month. Great tires. Of course anything was better than the OEM Potenzas. When they say 'summer tire', they mean it. Always had alignment issues, but no more.

BTW - I went with the 255/40/17s. Look great - nice wide stance. Won't be scuffing my rims anymore.

tirerack also has the Avid V4s, not just the H4s, if you're interested (although if you're not planning on going over 130 mph, you don't really need the V-rated tires)... cheaper than a lot of the tires listed up top, pretty durable, handle and grip MUCH better than OEMs, they seem to wear pretty evenly and not too fast... I bought my car used with Yokos on the back and OEMs on the front and they were pissing me off SOO much until I got them rotated... the difference was incredible, but my tail slides out on sharp turns if I take them really hard... IMO, if you want a cheaper high performance tire, go with the Yokohama AVID tires... I've gotta say, they're the best tires you can get if you want to fork over as little cash as possible
