Tire Help!

My 2004 TL's EL42's need replacing (again). I am very disappointed in them as far as tread life is concerned. 14K miles and I need new tires. eeesh!

Aside from the poor tread wear I really like the EL42's. My experience is that they handle very well through the S curves on my mountainous commute.

I don't push the car (too much) but like how it responds in turns and while braking. I think the EL42's are somewhat poor on accelerating. Could be wrong but that is what I feel.

I want a tire with longer tread life that handles equally well.

So... what I would like to know is what tire should I go with?

1. Turanza EL42's again
2. Potenza RE960AS Pole Position
3. Turanza LS-Z
4. Some other tire you recommend

Thanks!

Look at the Toyo Proxes 4 or Pirelli P-Zero Nero M&S.

Read this article. It is rather old, but it gives you an idea of why Acura selected the EL42s, although they seem to have missed the boat on wear. The article gives you some pointers on tires, although of course it features the Pilot Exalto.

I like the Pirelli PZero Nero M+S myself, although in NJ, you may want to have summer and winter tires and get the best of both worlds. All season tires are always a compromise, and with the really cold weather we have been having here, in the teens and 20's the Pirelli compounds seemed to be reaching their limit. Summer tires in this cold weather, even if the roads are clear are deadly dangerous, the summer compounds just not designed for the cold temperatures. They become like hard plastic.

Don't go with EL42's. There are a lot better choices out there and your best bet is to look at the survey results at Tirerack. Decide what category tire you are looking for and then look at the surveys. It is a great resource for purchasing tires.

Good Luck.

Depending on your weather- the Yokahama Avid are popular and reasonably priced under 100 each

I have the M&S Michelin energy plus and they work fine for heavy rain and normal days and some fun driving but are pricey at 130- 150 each in a 16 inch

Try tirerack.com for ideas and call local to see prices

Out of what you listed, the Turanza LS-Z is probably the best all-around tire, but they are way pricey, like the EL-42's. IMHO, though, the LS is much much closer to worth that money. The Pole Positions have gotten very favorable reviews on here, but they are new so their longevity is still undetermined. The P-Zero Nero is an excellent choice for the way you describe your driving and *should* last a driver like you, oh, 25K or so -- or more. Often an H-rated tire, like the Yoko Avid H4S will get you more wear, and that tire has good reviews and would likely serve you well. These are all all-season tires.

As suggested, use Tire Rack for research.

After looking at the reviews at Tire Rack, I bought four Potenza Pole Position tires. They're nice and quiet and much more comfortable than the EL-42's. But, two of them had excessive radial run-out causing a vibration that I couldn't put up with and Firestone refused to replace them - said they weren't that bad. My next stop is a shop where they will be shaved off to get rid of this imperfection. Needless to say, this spoiled the Pole Position experience and it will be a cold day in hell before I buy another Bridgestone product! I've owned Yokahama's for my old Honda and they're super quiet and comfortable, but some Acura driver's say they're a bit too soft for the Acura. Read a lot of reviews; there're a lot available at Tire Rack and at Discount Tires too, I think, and at the manufacturers websites, I think.
