Suspension-When to change?

Hey all,

Ive done almost all the basic things there is to do to my 2008 tls. Tints, J-pipe, Wheels etc. It has 100,000 miles on it.

I havent gotten the Tein suspension changed, but im waiting for a good time to do it. I dont want to splurge the money out on Tein's when my s-type suspensions are fine.

What im asking is, when is a good time/logical time to change out the suspensions?

Thanks all

There is no mileage figure as to when replace shocks/struts, only when the OE go bad, usually quite a long time.
I have an '08 knock around car with 182K miles, OE suspension no problems,
daughter's Max 235k miles like wise, and the son in laws '96 Jeep GC (wife's old Jeep) 334k same suspension and our RX7, 205k miles, need I say, same suspension.
I did have a '93 GC that blew a rear shock with only 63K miles.

Replace when they go bad, otherwise you're wasting money.

But the other side to that is they will never go bad, and I hear the Tein Suspensions really change the feel of the car, and what not. Also I want to lower my car a tad rather than keep it at stock height.. and dont want to waste money on s-techs

Then change them. Not sure what answer you're looking for. If you want approval, ask the wife/GF. :p

Seen shocks/struts go 85K miles and need changing because they were starting to leak and seen near 300K miles perfectly fine.
Only coil spring part really need changing eventually when it becomes too soft.

There are many factors that affect the life expectancy of your suspension. If you drive hard, or have springs with a big drop on stock shocks, you'll wear out your OEM shocks relatively quickly.

In any case, when the time comes that you need new components, check out our website for affordable options. We do carry spring and shock options, but if your budget allows it I would recommend looking into a set of coilovers. We offer our XLR8 ISC coilovers that are very popular for this platform. The Street Sport model is a great performance upgrade and offers independent height and 32 way damping adjustment. This means you can dial in the exact height you want and change the firmness of the shock to get your ride just the way you want it.

I replaced the factory shocks in my TL at around 160K on the rears (had 1 bad strut) and then replaced the fronts struts at 180K. The feel of the new struts is a night and day difference!

I spent $100 dollars on the OE shocks though the black market here and swapped them out myself. Honestly changing out the shocks was a huge improvement after 160-180K miles of wear and tear.

Springs on stock struts also shorten the life of the shocks from the added pressure.
