Steering Wheel Wobble

I've got an '05 TL 6-speed. When accelerating moderate to hard in 1-3 gears I notice a considerable wobble in the wheel. Anyone else experienced this? If so, what was the cause and the fix? Thanks!

Are you referring to torque steer? Cause there is no fix to that except working out your forearms....lol

No, not torque steer. I know 100% what that feels like. This is a vibration in the steering wheel, as if you were to make small left and right turns very rapidly. Any ideas?

If not torque steer (which should be a consistent pull on the steering wheel in one direction), the tire balance may be off; maybe uneven tire pressure or wear.
Visually inspect the front and rear tires for anything lodged in them, then see if a front tire balance helps. If not, make a visit to an Acura dealer service department. Hope it's a simple balance issue.

wow
i was just about to make a post about this...

i just started experiencing this as well. i have an 04 w/about 66k.
it is NOT torque steer.

the only thing i could think of was balancing also, but there is no vibration under normal driving.
the only other thing i can think of would be something w/ the lsd... ???

anyone else experiencing/experienced this?... or have an idea what could be causing it.

Have you hit any curbs or anything? Sounds like a bent wheel

I'd say your wheels are severly out of balance. I would have the tires pulled off, re-mounted and the wheels balanced again with a road-force wheel balancer (not all shops have these).

if they were out of balance- they would shimmy/ vibrate during normal driving...

this only happens during strong acceleration...

they have been hunterforce balanced.

If it is smooth under cruising conditions and only vibrates during accerlation then you may have a problem with one of the front axle/CV joints, usually the inner joint is the culpret. This same type of vibration was a problem for some Chrysler products, the problem in them was the motor mounts would let the engine sagg too low which would put too much pressure on the cv joints thus causing a vibration during acceleration. So to answere your question I would say that you have an inner cv joint acting up.

there is no vibration though... just a slight "wobble" as perdue describes...

thanks

Yes, you are right wobble, is a better word than vibration. What I said above is still the most likely cause if you are sure it is not a tire issue. One question, does it wobble worse the harder you are accelerating? A bad cv joint will wobble worse the harder you accerate.

yes, i believe the harder i accelerate the more noticeable it is...

bad cv joint... that does not sound cheap...

as soon as i have time i will rotate the tires to see if this makes a difference...

hopefully it will, but i have a feeling it will not...

Bad CV joints for a 1-year-old Acura? I doubt that's the problem.

Is your cars lowered? Your alignment might be off. It even might be off just a fraction out of spec so that you don't notice it at cruising speeds.

Not lowered... completely stock. Also, haven't hit anyhing that I know of. I'll go take a look at the wheels today, but that being said, I'm fairly certain its NOT a balance/wheel issue.

I'm going to try and take it into another dealer to get it looked at. I'll let them know that this is a possibility. Any suggestions on a good dealer in central MD?

Well, a little update on the saga that is my steering wheel waggle.

I took it into Tischer Acura this week and they inspected EVERYTHING (so they claim). They said the CV joints are fine as is the entire steering system and suspension. They say that the wobble is coming from the tires themselves (Pirelli PZero Neros). They say that the tires are not built straight or something like that. They claim that when on a lift, when the tires spin you can see them wobble.

Anyone ever heard of this?

I just discovered the source of my "wobble" at about 75-80 MPH. I found out my rims are "stud centered" not "hub centered". The technician showed my on the Hunter Roadforce how the wheel is able to move slightly on the hub due to the hub hole on the rim being larger than the hub itself. He then put the wheels back on the car and showed me how they can move.

Now looking to find some hub centered rims and selling these Enkei's with tires.

Yep, I had a bad set of Yoko ES100's that had 'cupped' treads after 4000 miles. The tire dealer said it was the suspension. My Acura dealer (Baranco) swapped my wheels/tires with one of the TL s on the lot and the 'wobble' went away (also a little tire noise). They wrote it all up and gave me a 'letter of proof' to give to the tire vendor. The tire vendor replaced my tires and its been smooth sailing ever since.

Vic, was your wobble only under acceleration?

You can get hubcentric rings that will adapt the bores to the right size. I got mine from Tirerack when I bought my rims for free without even having to ask for them.
