Question A-Spec Wheels or SSR wheels?

I can't seem to make up my mind and need some help. I have a RRP/Camel 6MT and would like to buy some 18" wheels. I've narrowed down my selection to the A-Spec wheels (18 x 8) in Platinum or Silver and the SSR GT7H's in silver (18x9). See the link below for pics of cars with the SSRs.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152414

Both wheels are compatible with the TPMS and have the right offset for the 6MT. I plan to upgrade with the A-Spec body kit in the near future and I like the looks of the whole A-Spec package, that is why the A-Spec wheels are so appealing.

The SSRs are on clearance at tirerack, weigh only 20lbs and would cost $200-$300 less than the A-Spec wheels for a set of 4.

The tire cost is the same no matter which way I go. What do you all think???? Should I go with the A-Specs (which color) or the SSRs?

Thanks in advance!

Of those choices, I'd get the ASPECs...can't really pick a color as I don't know what they look like (never liked them enough to care). On the forum, the SSR's will be more unique; on the road, both will be unique as 99% of TL drivers have stock wheels. Go with your gut.

You can guess my vote. SSRs!

I couldn't be happier with my choice. The wheels look even better in person than the pictures and it a classic style that will wear well with time and still be worth something.

Also, it's a top quality wheel and it's forged, yet less money. Bingo.

Get the SSRs! (as long as you don't live in my town)

If it is true that the A-Specs weigh 26-27 lbs for 18x 8.5, then get the SSRs that weigh 20. That is substantial unsprung weight savings. See the article on wheel weights and their penalties.

SSR!! 9inch wide wheel? A little wide, no? Don't they have 8.5 for the price? I have SSR Comps 18x8.5 42mm offset.

I think the A-specs are around 25lbs, but yes, the SSRs are considerably lighter. I believe the stock wheels are around 21lbs. I know all about unsprung weight! My previous car would lose .2-.3sec in the 1/4 when it had its 18" wheels as opposed to the 16" stockers!

Thanks for the pics motodaveo! Nice car! I don't think you'll have to worry about me being in your town... Too much snow! I think I saw an Iowa NG sign in a pic??

They are wide wheels, but I would stick with the 235mm wide tire, so it shouldn't be an issue. I believe someone on here has a 245mm tire on these rims and it is tight. The 8.5" width version of the rim is not on clearance.

Yeah vatltltl, I'm in Des Moines. I think the snow is almost gone.

jchcmax, the wheel is available in a narrower size but the clearance is on the 18 x 9. I mentioned in an earlier post that you can feel them follow groves in the road once and a while. The width looks awesome though, and it's great on the onramps!

Hey Vatltltl, one thing I thought of later. The Aspec wheel will look like a larger wheel on the car if it isn't lowered. I've actually had TLs with all three of the wheels you described here (I work at an Acura dealer) and the Aspec wheels look like they are bigger to me. Once I lowered my car the SSRs look big to me too, but at stock ride hight the Aspec looks like a larger wheel. I think its because the "ring" where the tire meets the wheel is more prominent on the SSR whereas the spokes on the Aspec kind of meet the rubber if you follow me. The Aspec is one of those wheels that looks bigger than it is. Didn't know if that was important to you or not.

Thanks for the tips man. I actually do prefer the larger look wheels. I just don't want to go to 19" wheel because of the greater $$, smaller tire selection (summer tires only), and ride penalty. Do you have the A-spec suspension on yours or did you lower it with something else?

What do you mean by "you can feel them follow the grooves in the road" when you were referring to the wider wheels? What size tire are you running?

The guy on our TireRack dealer line said I might notice the tires following groves more because of the width of the rubber. It hasn't been a problem at all. Just something I notice on certain roads. I'm running Perelli PZero Nero M&S in 235/40/18. He said I could go wider but the trade off was more tramlining.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=47

The difference in feel I notice most is that the power steering has so much more boost in my 04 than my company car (07). It makes comparisons a little difficult. The tires on my o4 feel like they have more grip but the steering is lighter, the 07 feels like it has less grip but the steering is firmer.

And I lowered it about 1" with the comptech springs. No other changes.

Whelp, I waited a day late.. the tirerack has sold on on the 18" SSR's. I should have made this post last week. Oh well, you snooze, you lose. It looks like I'll be getting the A-specs. The funny thing is now I'm leaning toward the chrome look wheels...

They should have these in stock again soon, as I received the silver today instead of the grey. I am going to have to call them tomorrow to try and get them traded.
