Shocks/springs -- some questions

I have a 2004 Acura TL Manual Transmission. 131K miles.

Ride is quite rough/bouncy, want to replace the shocks. Never had them replaced.
I just want a smoother ride. This is just a daily drive vehicle, nothing too extreme.
I dont really want to lower my car, keep it simple.

1) I was thinking of going with the KYB shocks.
Do I need to order anything other than the KYB shocks i.e. mounts, etc?
If so, what exactly?

2) Do I need to order separate springs for them?
If so, what would you recommend?

Mechanics in the bay area want roughly $350 labor (I cant do this job myself).

Sorry for the dumb questions in advance.

Here are a couple links to OEM parts......I would think OEM is better than kyb. Our vendors on here may be able to match or beat the OEM price on this website. Btw-this website is a vendor on here as well!

Front shock absorber #4

Acura Parts @ AcuraOEMparts.com - Genuine Acura OEM Parts from Delray Acura

Rear shock absorber part #7

Acura Parts @ AcuraOEMparts.com - Genuine Acura OEM Parts from Delray Acura

Hope this is of some help!

You will need to have springs & top hats swapped to new shock absorbers. You shouldn't need new springs, or top hats......

Thanks!

The acura parts come out to about $400 shipped from the discount acura dealers.
I can get the KYB full set of shocks for $240 shipped.

Is there that big a different in quality between the two? I dont want to be penny wise, pound foolish on this.

thanks

As long as the suspension is in good shape, no leaks etc, just go to a softer tire e.g. DWS.

I really wouldn't spend money on the KYB Shocks. They're not terrible shocks but there are better options out there. Best shocks you can get are the Koni Yellows. They are going to offer you the best performance possible along with a great ride. You can pair them with a Tein H.Tech spring to get a mild drop and maintain a comfortable ride along with some added performance.

The Tein H.Tech springs lower the car a little more than half an inch:
TEIN Springs - HTech - Excelerate Performance - Japanese and European Performance Specialists!!

I have the Koni Yellows in stock as well.

Ok-- so the Koni Yellow are "better" -- how much better?

I can get a complete set of KYB for $240 shipped.
Koni Yellow are approx $600.
Acura OEM are approx $400.

How much a difference are the KYB vs Acura OEM vs Koni Yellows? And is the $$$ difference really worth it?

I'm looking for a really nice commute ride.

[and do i really need new springs at more $$$$]?

thanks.

They are that much better. It's a performance shock. They are going to blow the other shocks out of the water.

How many miles are on the springs? Typically if you're replacing your shocks because they are bad, then the springs usually follow suit. You don't want to have brand new shocks and beat up springs. It's going to defeat the purpose of trying to obtain a nice ride. Lowering springs will provide more performance and give the car that aggressive look that it deserves. Koni Yellows and Tein H.Techs are a very commutable ride. I had the same setup on my Prelude back in the day and I absolutely loved. Received a lot of compliments on the ride quality and overall appearance.
