Right Front Susension Clunk

My son's '05 TL (65k miles) has recently developed a noticeable clunk-like noise when encountering minor potholes and bumps in the road at normal town speeds, 25~35 mph. It doesn't seem noticeable at walk speed. The dealer couldn't reproduce it in the shop and so in the interest of embellishing the service department's receivables, suggested a shotgun approach of some $1200 worth of non-descript suspension work & a "complimentary" realignment. Feeling that they're only guessing at the problem, we temporarily declined.

Tires & brakes are new and this noise preceeds tire & brake replacement. You can hear it inside the cabin though it's not loud. There seems to be no driveability or handling issue. Alignment has been checked and is good. No accident history.

Anyone with any ideas what this could be?

Thanks!

I am having that exact problem. Mine is an 05 as well. If you figure anything out please let me know. I talked to a couple guys who think it may be a bad strut. I'm not for sure yet.

My 01 CLS has this, I am pretty sure it is radius rod bushings. I am about to replace them so I'll be able to report if it clears it up.

Thanks. Please do let us know if there's any improvement. The dealership wanting to replace some suspension parts (to the tune of $1200+) couldn't guarantee that this was what we needed, but said that two of their line techs agreed this was where to start. I might have let them proceed had they been able to reproduce the noise in the shop or by driving around the lot, but $1200 is a lot of gelt for guesswork. The size of "bump" it takes to cause the noise at 30 mph would be approx equivalent to running over a piece of 2 x 4 lumber.

It almost sounds like a weak shock or loose caliper but the dealer said it's rare to have to replace shocks before 90k. Nothing is leaking or loose and the brakes were just done (and the noise preceeds the brake job).

Mine does it (sporadically) when coming to a stop, when going over a speed bump (slowly) or seemingly for no reason.

My entire suspension (except radius rod bushings) is under 10k. I have an appointment to take the car in next Monday, hopefully I'll get it back by Wednesday and I'll report as soon as I have info.

These are much bigger (stronger) then stock, I have them on my car & they are great. They are front/rear & side specific.

Those are the parts.

You pick up the car, no need to remove the tires. You need allen wrenches and sockets. a big vicegrip helps but is not mandatory.

Same here. I had the annoying problem mostly over small bumps. Mine wasn't the end links, it was the swaybar bushings but still swaybar related.

FWIW, it seems when there is a lot of noise over little bumps it's usually swaybar related in these cars.

I still have the urethane front swaybar bushings for the auto trans (25mm) with less than 100 miles on them if anyone wants them very cheap. I removed them only because I installed the large 28mm H&R bar.

How bad were those endlinks when you pulled them out? Mine are nearly frozen, they didn't seem to have any play in them but I'm getting some of the clunk back again and I'm suspecting the large 28mm bar is killing the stock links.

When you say trashed, did they have a bunch of play in them? I'm sure the solid 28mm bar I have installed is not helping them.

There was some play.

I have the 27mm Neuspeed in front and 23mm Comptech in back, these work great.

You should check the part numbers those are for gen2 TL/CL don't know if there are different ones for third gens.

the endlink was pretty damn loose! i could simulate the play in them using my hands!! i was thinking of upgrading to the TL-S sway far up front to help out the oversteer i have from being slightly raked but i was thinking ill need to upgrade the endlinks as well too. how are urs holding up with H&R sway bar?

WOw this is so weird I was actually going to make a post about this EXACT problem I am experiencing on my 07 Type S. Since day one I noticed what sounded like a "loose" front right suspension. You wouild hit a bump and it just felt sloppy. No handling or alignment issues or previous accidents. Glad I stumbl;ed across this thread im gonna go remove my front right wheel and see whatsup.

I picked mine up at least five times. Nothing loose or looking like it was not the way it should be.

I have replaced everything but the radius rods & bearings so by a process of elimination the bearings have to be the culprit.

The car goes in on Monday, I hope the noise is gone after I get it back.

So far so good. I'm getting a very slight clunk just like before but barely noticable. Last time this happened it was the swaybar bushing bolts. Going to check that first. If it turns out it's the endlinks I'll definately let you know.

You'll love the TL-S front bar especially in the higher speed turns.

yea, i still get a "HUSHED" clunk every now and then and i think im just gonna attribute it to the TLs front suspension. once i get the new sway bar, bushings and endlinks, ill check for noises again. my bro in-laws 01 CL does the same thing although i suspect his endlinks are bad. havent checked his out yet.

I have the very same issues like you guys, but my Endlinks fell tight on my 04 Tl, I've just ordered a set of KYB GR-2's so when I get them in and installed I will surely let all know, It is very annoying and I need to get it gone soon.
I have a slight Endlink pop in the rear but I need to settle the front first.

^^^are your shocks worn? Why are you replaceing them? If you are experiencing clunk noises I'm pretty sure the endlinks are going. All it takes is one massive pathole and that endlink will be on its way out. Just wouldn't want you to spend more $$ than you would have to....my $.02

Hey Guys The noise is on the top half of the mount, I believe the noise is traveling but all is tight as far as i went threw all components. When the shock was out of the vehicle I grabbed the ends of it and pushed in and out (no pun Intended) and it made a slight clunk when I tried changing directions only rest was ok.
So thats the only reason for the change just giving it a shot.
Got the KYB's for the front for 124$ on Amazon Just Suspension.
Thanks for the .02$
