Powdercoating Aspec rims

I've used the search and found that the "chrome look" on aspec rims is simply a painted finish and it should be OK to powdercoat. I brought them in to a powder coating shop and they would not powdercoat them unless they were down to the aluminum alloy. So my question is, should I just use 180 grit sandpaper to remove the finish and bring them in? Or do I need to do a bit more?

Mine were sandblasted by the powercoating company. Sanding won't get the paint from the small crevices.
