oxygen vs nitrogen

I have a friend who works at a shop with a nitrogen tank. Is it better to run nitrogen vs oxygen in tires now? Also, worse case, if your out somewhere and you have to have air, being the tire is nearly full with nitrogen, can you top it off with oxygen and be safe?

I'd just wait until nitrogen is as readily available as O2. It's too inconvenient to go find a place that has it, and when you get there, you have to pay for it.

If you can get it at a reasonable price, go for it.

(pure) nitrogen in tires is far more expensive and only normally used when it makes a big difference such as airplane tires and racing.

One reason I'm asking is because the place I'm getting the wheels and tires from will be filling them with nitrogen as a quick bolt on when received. I have a friend who owns a garage that I can get nitrogen from. But in a pinch that I need air, I wanted to make sure it would mix with no danger. Normally, with my other vehicles, I use air like the other 99% of people.

if u have nitrogen in ur tires and say one is low u can top it off with air if u dont have access to a nitrogen shop ......many shops that carry nitrogen will top it off with nitrogen for free unless u have a flat then they will charge you at the regular rate for the tire.......all this has happenend to me before lol

Not oxygen, but air from an air station or pump is fine.

FYI, atmospheric air is about 78% nitrogen, with the remainder being oxygen and minor percentages of various other gases.

Nitrogen is used by Costco when it installs tires, FWIW.

Yup like the above post stated. You are basically only paying for 21 to 22% more nitrogen then what standard air gives you.

I use nitrogen in my motorcycle, Porsche Boxster, Saleen Truck and now my new TL. The reason that nitrogen is so much better can be found here.

http://www.getnitrogen.org/

Bottom line is if you can get it done for $2 to $4 per tire DO IT, you will not be sorry.
