I was looking to get the 255/40-17 Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season tires but they are going for $205 to $250 per tire around my area (central NJ). Tirerack shows them for $152.00 each.

So after visiting a local GY dealer I was talked into looking at Goodyear Eagle GT Ultra High Performance All Season tires. Again I'm looking at 255/40-17 size for the 2005 TL.



These are brand new so there is no data on them yet other than they have a 400 treadwear rating.

At my suggestion, a guinea-pi.... I mean a co-worker bought them. They look awesome, and handle great in the wet. I suspect they'll be better in straight-line snow traction too, but I wouldn't want to corner them too hard in the snow (no siping on the outer shoulder blocks).

The outer shoulder blocks are not as large as the photographs suggest, so while I think it's an overall better wet-performer than the F-1 A/S, I think the F-1 A/S will probably be better in the dry.

 

A local tire store recommended these as well. I currently have 960 pole positions that need to get replaced and he stated that the Bridgestones would be $190 per. Also mentioned the Dunlop Signature.

Tire Rack's lastest reviews did not have the F1 doing well.

 

Just checked Goodyear's site and the GT does not perform as well as the F1 in any category except for ride comfort, which was 8 (F1-8), and snow traction, also 8, (F1-7).

 

Yeah I wouldn't go by goodyear's web site. If the Eagle GT did in fact perform as well as the F1, Goodyear would not publish that fact, because it would make the F1 look bad as its quite a bit more expensive etc. I am waiting for the Tire rack survey results to come out. Those are a much better gauge of performance

 

I got a local Goodyear dealer to give them to me for $148.50 That's $24.00 more than Tire rack but I didn't have to pay for shipping.

The total for all 4 tires was $708.00 with mount and balance. They even checked the aligment for free and it was in spec.

First the tires look just plain badass on the car. 255/40-17 helped make the car stick in the turns like it's on rails.

The only drawbacks are when it snows...wider is worse, but after driving the T-Bird for 13 years I think I handle it.

On the highway the tires are slightly noiser than the Bridgestone 235's that came on the TL. There is some NVH stuff coming through the steering wheel now and I can feel it in the floor boards as well. The tires balance perfectly and the alignment was in spec. So I think it's safe to say the tires are harder than the stockers and judging by the 400 treadwear rating it stands to reason.

I noticed on a lane change I start turning to soon and had to adjust. Great response from the Goodyear Eagle GT's. No wet weather yet but we are due for some nasty rain tomorrow. I'll report back.

I just got them put on yesterday for $133/tire at Town Fair Tire. Under $700 out the door for 4 tires, balance, 4 wheel alignment, etc.

 

$133/tire, is that including Mounting and balancing? Thats a great deal if it is. Discount tire direct has them in 255/40/17 for $128/tire with free shipping.

 

Town Fair Tire will price match any tire if you can prove it. They wanted $215/tire, but I price-matched it to Discount Tire that had it for $135/tire; so I got them for $133/tire.
They only include mounting, valve stems, and 2 wheel alignment for 2 or more tires bought. I paid $13/tire for balancing & $49 for 4 wheel alignment. But I get flat repair, tire rotation, 2 wheel alignments, and some kind of road hazard warranty for free. Might get discounts for 4 wheel aligns.

I got 235/45/17

 

Thats a pretty good deal. Which Town Fair Tire did you go to? I have one about 2 miles from my house, never used them, but I may take a trip down and see what they can do

I price-matched the tires through the website since the tires aren't instock at the store. The manager said to go through the website since the price match was a big discount than what he could do. Tires shipped free to the store, 3-5 business days, and put on that day.
I don't know if I get a road hazard warranty now after looking at my receipt, but I got a good price.

It was my first experience with them too and was pleased. I bought some crappy Nexen N3000s first because that's all they had in my size, traded them in for the GY F1 A/S after a week. You have 30 days to try the tires, don't like them, trade them in for something else & only pay the difference. No penalties or anything.

 

Oh, I thought you had purchased the Eagle GT tires. If you got the F1s for $133/tire thats an even better deal!!

 

Oops, I read the thread wrong. Poster first talked about the F1 A/S, then went on about GTs.

Just drove home in the pouring rain and the tires were great.

 

So anyone with the Eagle GTs have any responses?? I need new tires.. thinking about these..

I just put 255/40-17 Goodyear Eagle GT's are rougher than the stock tires (Bridgestone) but man do they stick like glue. I had them out in the rain and they did very well.

I would recommend them!

I have narrowed my choice down to the Eagle GT in 255/40/17. Like you, I also have snow to deal with, but I figure they can't possibly be any worse than the EL42s in the snow, they were horrible.

My only concern with the Eagle GT is noise. Would you say they are slightly noisier than EL42s when brand new or much louder? Do you have any pics of the 255/40 eagle GTs on stock rims?

 

My car has Sumitomos on it right now.. do you think the GT's are better?

 

Tire rack just releasd a test they did this summer with the Eagle GT pitted against the Yoko W4S, Conti ExtremeContact, and Kumho ASX. Ovre all the Eagle GT came in 2nd, just barely edged out by the W4S. The Eagle GT had superior wet performance over all other tires and was dead even with the W4S in dry performance and braking. I would say that if tire rack also tested the Eagle F1 (which goodyear would never let them do), it would have edged it out as well due to the better wet performance and noise quality.

If you actually look at the performance charts, the Goodyear GTs *DESTROYED* all the competitors, including the Yoko W4S, in nearly every performance category except dry breaking where it was only 2' longer. It slaughtered the W4S in the wet track.

Although the review commented negatively on the GT's dry steering response on the street, the chart showed better dry track steering response.

In fact, the only reason I can see why the Yoko won would be ridiculous weight given to ride comfort, where the Yoko came in first and the GT came in last. I'm really puzzled how when comparing UHP AS tires, more weight isn't given to performance characteristics over comfort.

 

Have had the GY f1 a/s on my car since July 07. In the beggining the tires were excellent and I had nothing but good things to say. I did take the wheels off the car for the winter last year and put them back on in March 08. I have been over short and long distances with these tires. My only complaint is that over time the road noise gets worse and worse. Outside that, no complaints on this end. I have the aspec wheels (18x8.5) and 245/40/18 as my tire (which fit like a glove - unlike the original tire size).

By the way, does anybody have an idea as to what the offset size of my wheels is? I have been looking and have saw anywhere from 35 to 55 - and I know it does make a difference with my Brembos)? Thanks.

I've had these for a month now and I can say they really grip well. It makes the car stick better in the turns (the car still leans like a school bus but hey).

The only complaint I have is the tires get flat spotted when sitting over night. When I drive for the first mile or so they feel square. As they warm up the vibration goes away completely. I drove 300 miles on the highway with them and they are quiet and comfortable.

I highly recommend them. I can't comment on the snow but I imagine they are going to be worse than the 235 size Bridgestone's. Wet traction is great and it's hard to get the VSA to kick on when accelerating from a stop in the rain.

The flat-spotting would annoy me greatly, so I guess it rules out the GTs for my car.

I also have the same problem. I have Bridgestone RE960as in the 245/35R19 & 275/30R19 flavor and it feels the same way until the tires warm up a bit.
Annoying at first but it smoothes out after a bit...

 

Just bought a set of the Eagle GTs in 255/40/17. Initial impressions are pretty good. The first thing I noticed was the brake response, the car slowed much more than usual when I applied a set amount of force. Don't know if its because the wider and newer tires have more rolling resistance or not. As others have said, the turn-in and response from the tires is awesome and the only bad thing I noticed is that they are slightly louder than the worn EL42s that they replaced, but I expected some noise going from a Touring tire to a UHP tire. Haven't tried them on the highway or in the rain yet.

 

In general it looks like the F1 did a bit better overall but not much and not consistently (especially in the wet).

As close to apples-to-apples as you're likely to get, because as mentioned, no way Tire Rack would run them head-to-head.


BTW - the F1 is losing ground to the BS 960 and others in the catagory as more miles and survey's are reported.

 

Just got the Goodyear GT in stock size, they look mean on the car. I decided on the GT cause the Potenza was a bit too much for me. After doing research online and seeing video of the performance, i gave it a shot. Just got home and the ride was good, im not an expert. My stockies was riding on the treadbar so i did notice a differnce in height when i sat in and was driving (stockies lasted 45,083 miles). The outter tread was the first thing that caught my eye when they gave me my keys back.

Cost me $ 739.21 at NTBW after price match with tirerack with Shipping. $555.96 for tires. $159.96 for mounting balancing, $74.99 for alignment (3 sides was out of alignment). They came with 6 months /6000 Miles road hazard warrenty (NTBW Thing), also life time tire rotation (would save me some $ over time).

 

I'm putting two on tomorrow. They're on the rears replacing the now bald, 65k, Mics. The stock rears look just like Tony's 'before' picture. I've got Falken 512's with about 52k on the front. They've got a couple of thousand left on em so I'm goona wait to switch them out.

Anyone else notice that the stock Mic's are death on wet roads after 10k miles or so? They're so bad I can't imagine how on earth they get the sack to charge so much for them.

You were able to notice your car was sitting ~1/4" higher while driving? Damn, that's like a sixth sense or something!

 

I would think that the GT's would be more beneficial for lowered cars such as mine, given its asymmetrical tread.

The striations are on the outer edge of the tire where there isn't as much camber wear.

 

Ok now for the snow update...

They plow in the snow and brought the traction control on many times. I felt like I was driving my T-Bird backwards.

But...it's the price you pay for a wider tire.

I'm in the market now for a new set of tires and I too have been considering the Goodyear Eagle GT's. My local tire dealer is offering some pretty good deals but I just can't seem to decided. Opinions please!!

Yokohama S-Drive = $610 OTD
Kumho Ecsta ASX = $548 OTD

I'm favoring the GT's but I also respect the opinions of my fellow Acura enthusiast.

 

After all the winter snow that just passed and the TL handling like a whole bunch of crap in it, I had decided a few months back that I would replace my stock Michelins out this summer even thou they have less than 14K miles on them...
That was all expedited when the TL met one of Chicago's Finest PotHoles last Friday. Drivers side tire blew out (1/4" side wall tear). After researching for a new tire and after taking A-Trains review and others on Azine along with those on tirerack, and placing cost into consideration, I decided to go with the Eagle GTs.
I overpaid by a bit, but i was in a rush to get the tire replaced by this weekend. (733 OTD with roadforce balancing and road hazard warranty from Discount Tire - Cook county has 10% sales tax so that bumped up the price)

The GT is night and day when compared to the stock Michelin. It is raining today in Chicagoland and the roads are plenty wet. The tires did not spin out upon "stepping on it". The michelins, even when brand new, sucked in this regard, as they started to spin when getting a little enthusiatic at the stop light (not a flooring of the gas pedal, but just reving up and beyond 4K rpms when accelerating off the light)

The GTs grip better when going around curves and the car feels more planted to the road. This may partly have to do with the tires being brand spankin new..but, right now, it feels awesome.
At highway speeds, however, the tires are louder than stock. They are not annoying loud, but the change is noticeable. Yet, I still consider it quiet because passengers can carry on a normal conversation when the music is set to a comfortable volume of 6-8.

I look forward to driving thru the snow with these, because the car was utterly useless when chicago and suburbs decided to cheap out on us this year with service and not plow streets overnight and got all stingy with the use of salt. Current pressure settings are as follows
Front - 35 psi (cold)
Rear - 37 psi (cold)

The GY A/S F1 suck for noise levels. My dad had them on his TL and the road noise was loud after 10-15K.

 

i HAD a set of these tires for about a year and about 9K miles on them before they were deemed WORN. not even a chance for a rotation as the rears wore faster than the fronts. initial review of the tire, great handling, sticky in corners and turns, ok to good wet handling, ok in snow, but that is where it all ends. as the tires wear, the road noise worsens, the handling sucks, and treadwear life...seriously 9K miles?! i had the car aligned when these tires were installed. the life of these tires absolutely SUCK. do not be seduced by the aggressive tread design. i don't know about the rest of you but i can't afford to be buying new tires every 9K miles. if you want to save money stay away from the GY eagle GTs. they aren't worth the trouble. i'm not the only one with treadwear issues. look over the reviews on tirerack especially the ones for the 5-20K mile reviews. i would have been happy to get 25-30K out of them, but that was not the case.

i've switched to the conti DWS tires. so far so good, but time will tell.

 

24k miles on mine so far. Treads around Just measured just now. All tires have at least 6/32" tread remaining. Driving style is 70% highway/30 city. Spirited when off the highway.

 

i bought these last year, a year later, done.... but i also get them for 100 a tire... i get what i pay for right
