Opinion on rim size, 06 TL
I need some opinions on changing my rims from 17's to 16s. I comutte more than 500 miles a week and wanted to down size to a 16" wheel, I could get tires that would double their life. Does anyone have pics or know about this situation? I found some cool rotas and thought of maybe dropping it also. let me know , thanks

I don't think anyone here is rolling on 16's. infact I think the only time ppl go for an 1" smaller in Rim size, is when they're going from 20"s to 19"s. i think 16's would look way to small, and besides, you can get better, long lasting tires with out changing wheel size.
and you want to drop it??? you know, when you drop a car, you increase the wear and tear of your suspension, so why would you do that, but then again, increase the life of your tires? I dunno bro, I think you should go for some 18"s or 19"s, and swrap them around 245/45 or 235/35 respectivley.

Rather than switching to a 16" and being troubled by purchasing new wheels, look into some high mileage, low cost 17" tires in the OE size. Kumho has the Platinum with a 600 UTQC rating for $130, and the Yokohama's new ENVigor H rated $125, W rated $135 both see a 560 rating, and the Continental DWS has a 540 rating $120.
In going to a 16" tire, tire size might be a problem as the 225/55 is slightly larger in diameter than the OE size, similar in height to a 245/45-17, but narrow in width. The 235/55 is 7/8" taller and tread wear ratings aren't much different from the OE size.

I would say if anything just move to a higher mileage 17" tire and keep the stocks 16s would look waaaay too small imo. I would drive over 600 miles a week last year and I went from 18" to 20" wheels in that time so if anything stay with 17s or upgade to bigger wheels and tires.

keep your 17s and get something with a high tread wear rating as those have mentioned. That's what I would do if this was strictly a commuter. What are you planning on dropping the car on?

the only time i'd think you may want to go to a 16" (and i still wouldn't) is for winter tire (a reality in the great white north) for better traction.
glad to see you went with some 18s, i just picked up mine a few weeks ago and posted some pics. i use the 17" stock wheels with my winter tires.

eeh not really mostly alot of guys with their cars but the cars were nice though, seeing all of the cars switched up makes me want to bag my TL now do it like Rodney haha. BTW nice wheels they go great with the grey of your car you know the width and offset of them?

Wow that is a ton of miles.
Really i ride on 16's on the winter and can't tell a difference. I mean sure it seems alot softer on corners but other than that there is 0 difference. Its kinda nice having that extra beef..not having to worry about pot holes or street imperfections.
I don't know the savings difference from 17 tires to 16 tires but whatever works. Like others have said getting a harder tread compound would be an ideal choice.
When getting a harder tread you won't be as grippy and might have to adjust your driving style.
