OEM wheel locks SUCK

so yesterday i installed my coilovers. pull my car up put the lift up start taking the wheels off. passenger side is off no problem. i get to the driverside, put the key in the lock on the front driverside tire. hit it with the impact gun and alls i hear is metal cracking then the lock spins freely. im 150238% sure it was on right, i checked, double checked, triple checked. thank god at my shop we have the tool to take the wheel lock off without damaging anything. and honestly i was quite surprised how EASY the lock came off. i just banged it on with a mini sledge, grabbed my 3/4" wrench and it spun right off. damage to lock is MINIMAL only scratches. but it was very loud doing it and i dont think thieves would make that much noise.

anyway. what can i do about the warranty on them? i bought them when i bought my car in august.

I guess you can check with the dealership and see if they will replace it.

If it's that much of a pain in the ass to take off on your car, a thief won't be interested in your car either. Better to have them on then not to have them on your car.

Steve, got any pics with the new stance? I got my coilovers yesterday, I'll probably install next weekend.

As for your problem, I don't think you're supposed to use an impact wrench on the wheel locks, are you?

i sent it to your cell phone

and your not suppose to tighten them with it. i only use it to take them off then hand torque them

never had a problem with them before and i did it maybe 300 times on all different cars.

Um you shouldn't use an impact gun whether you're taking them off or putting them on for the simple fact you just might crossthread the stem. And as for a warranty I wouldn't think acura will warranty them unless you got the wheel insurance package they were offering sometime back. The wheel locks they use are McGuards though. I usually order a second lock key for just those reasons.

think about that for a moment.

how is using an impact gun on a wheel lock with the key going to cross thread it. if the key slips out of the spot, it will just spin.

now assuming if you meant just putting the nut in the socket and holding it up to the bolt without threading it than yes, you will crossthread it

I meant the lugs not the key and locks.

So the story goes..

I went into my shop wanting to install my coilovers, but totally forgot to bring my keys. I live an hour away, so he resorted to going to another shop next door, borrowing a key that "blasts" out any "Honda/Acura" keys. Piece of cake, and it doesn't even damage the key, since it was reusable.

Bottom line, if someone want your wheels, they'll get them if they do their homework. Locks in general are just there as deterrance or a "challenge" to steal wheels.

It's not. But you can gall the threads taking it off with an impact. The no load speed on some of those things are in excess of 6,000 rpm. I used an impact to take lugs off but I backed off the trigger quickly as they broke free to keep rpms down.
