New Yorker Looking for Rims...What's too big?

Looking for some rims...but don't know what's gonna work. I live in New York and potholes around here eat cars alive. Looking for direction on what's big enough...especially since I tack miles on my car like it's my job. 7 months 21K :yack:
Anyway...I really want to get 18s but something is telling me not to. If anyone drives as much as me in this holy city...let me know if there have been alot of problems. Also...interested in offset sizes..what is the largest I can go without rubbing.

Most of the guys who are forced to drive in your neck of the woods say go 18's tops. That way you have 40 series tires under you. Max I'd say is 19's but who knows somebody will someday slap 20's on a tl and try to drive it everyday.

What is the ideal tire/rim size...(Largest and widest I can fit) without having to lower and not have any rub?

Honestly, I wouldn't even consider a wheel + tire package without a small drop. I once put on 18's on my TL and it looked like a 4 X 4 till I dropped it. So plan on springs or coilovers sometime after wheels. If you go 18's bro try 18X7.5 with 225/40/18 tires. The stock tires su@$ once you ditch them your car will be saooo much better.

I was considering 1/2 in to 1 in drop. It sucks up around here because the City streets eat you up. My friend has a 328i beamer...w/18s" and lowered...he goes through tires like a madman. I wish it was like the aloha state.

Tires are a different story. Some wear really bad. Plus it depends on how you drive also. If I had a bimmer I would go through tires in 6 months. A 1" to 1.5" drop is just fine no prob. If you worry about wear stay away from the really sticky tires.

re: rim and drop

Value T,

I live in New york City also.
I was considering putting on 19's. If i do that do I still have to drop it? Will it look like a 4 X 4? Will 19" rims affect the height of the car with a 235/ 35 series tire?

malik, 19in rims will definately raise the cars height without a drop, hense the term 4x4. 19in rims= drop necessary. and Bronx02TL where in the BX u at?

Lots of guys here are dropped on comptechs. Personally they look awesome, not radically slammed.

I live in NJ, but I go to see my girlfriend in queens every weekend. Going through the city is horrible. The roads are really bad with tons of poleholes and endless construction areas. Sometimes, I am afraid that my stock 17s won't be able to make it through. But I am still looking to get 18s, nothing bigger than that. I have comptech springs and the ride is very comfortable even when I am in NY.

re: rims

Dragon,

The springs might be comforable on stocks, but when you put on the skinnies (40 series) the ride might feel different. Let me know how the ride is when you put on the 18". How soon are you putting on the 18's. I'm putting on 18"s, but i'm not sure what type of springs I'm going to put on.
